We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Spain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor behind my success is choosing something I’m truly passionate about. I think if you pursue a business goal just for money alone, but it isn’t something you are passionate about, it’s easy to get burnt out quickly and give up before you see success. In my opinion, the key to success is to find something that you love doing and that you would be doing anyway even if you weren’t making money doing it, and pursue that. And also, have patience. Most successes don’t happen overnight.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started blogging about decorating and DIY 10 years ago, as a stay at home mom with a desperate need for a creative outlet. I didn’t know how to do anything — I had never even picked up a power tool before. But I was determined to learn and document it as I went along. It accidentally turned into a business over time, and I realized I was really passionate about challenging myself to learn new skills and hopefully inspiring others to do the same. I started working with brands, and several years later launched a YouTube channel sharing DIY tutorials too. Now I make all sorts of things for my home, and have learned new skills like woodworking and welding. This year I’m branching out and launching a photography business, as well as a new photography blog and YouTube channel, coming soon.

It wasn’t easy to grow my business into what it is today, and work life balance as a newly single mom of 3 is definitely a challenge, but I have stuck with it because it’s what I love and I can’t imagine doing anything else. I’ve learned that we are all capable of way more than we think we are, whether it be learning the skills it takes to run a website, build a piece of furniture, edit a video, or whatever other skill is required of the business you want to pursue. We can all learn how to do absolutely anything we want, because the resources exist and are, for the most part, easily accessible, no matter what that skill may be.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite places to take guests visiting the area are: Ponce City Market (the rooftop is fun); Westside Provisions District (I love Little Trouble and JCT Kitchen); the Georgia Aquarium is definitely something every visitor should see at least once; Krog Street Market; the Southern Gentleman in Buckhead is a favorite; Stone Mountain; just about anywhere on the Beltline; and the rooftop at the Kimpton in Buckhead is cool too.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would, without question, not be able to do what I love without the support of my online audience, as well as my family and friends. My blog readers, YouTube subscribers, and social media followers are the reason I get to keep creating content for a living.
