We had the good fortune of connecting with Driune Santana and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Driune, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
“Can I really do this?” That was my first thought about creating my own business. When I first came up with the name The Culture Commentator, I knew I wanted it to eventually become a business. It started out as just a YouTube channel and Ig account for my interviews or media coverages. Eventually, I had this thought in my mind about creating my own media platform. So that’s what I did last year in November and I just purchased an LLC for it so now it’s official.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Living in Mississippi I’ve learned that with my career in media there are no opportunities out here for me. I never really had anyone here guide me into being who I am today. I gain a lot of knowledge from working with several publications in the past. I will say one of my most proudest moments was me not giving up. There was a time back in 2019 going to go 2020 that I wanted to give up. I didn’t know where my career was going. I was frustrated and just completely felt like I wasn’t doing enough or things weren’t moving fast enough. I managed to pull myself out of this funk when I covered this music week in Jackson, Mississippi January 2020. I started to see a change in my work ethic. I began pushing myself again. It was very challenging, but I knew that being apart of the media was meant for me. I’ve learned to be patient along the way and to pray more and to write down my goals. I’ve manifested a lot of opportunities for myself and I’m damn proud of it. I want the world to know that The Culture Commentator is here to shift the culture through entertainment, fashion, and lifestyle. The world should also know that Driune Santana will one day be a household name and everyone will want to know my story.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a artsy person so I love museums, photography and music. So I would take my friend to the Mississippi Arts Museum, then we go to various lounges like 4th Avenue Lounge, Kemistry, Names and Faces, Johnny T’s etc. We have an arcades, skating and bowling alley place called Spinners. If you have a love for music we have a lot of blues events happening as well as this music week event called Jackson Indie Music Week.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I just want to shoutout my friends and family. They have watched me grow into being a journalist and now a small business owner. It will be six years of me being a journalist and I couldn’t thank them enough for constantly being that support system.
