We had the good fortune of connecting with Double AA and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Double AA, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Clayton, New Jersey. Clayton is a small town with two traffic lights where everybody knows everybody. I am the oldest of my parents’ six children. My father was an elder at our local church a couple of towns away. It was in church where my love for music developed. I started playing the drums at the church when I was eleven yrs old. I also joined the elementary school marching band around the same time. I continued playing in the marching band through out elementary and middle school before joining the basketball team in high school. I worked my way into a starting position and was scouted by colleges/universities. It was in college where I started to hone my craft as a producer, creating multiple mixtapes featuring my classmates who were artists.

Playing sports taught me the value of team work and collaboration, which are at the core of my value system today. I also learned that talent will only take you as far as the work you put behind it, and failing is a part of the process. That is one of the main reasons I continue to work and improve my skillset. Being the oldest sibling taught me responsibility. My past keeps me grounded and focused on my goal of being a great producer. I enjoy the process of creating music and working with others to achieve a common goal. My parents taught me to value everyone regardless of their station in life. Treat the janitor like the CEO. This perspective has helped me foster great relationships and gain favor in challenging situations. I am who I am and who I’m becoming because of my past and the great people I have met along the way!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a music producer that primarily operates in the R&B and Hip Hop genres. I also view myself as an artist. Although I do not sing or rap I consider my music to be art, therefore I am an artist. My perspective is what differentiates me from others. I place a very high value on team work and collaboration. What does that mean to me? It means I believe everyone that participates in the creation of a song should receive an equal percentage of that same song. From the composers to the engineers. My logic derives from a clock. A mechanical clock is comprised of many moving parts, large and small. Remove the smallest piece and the clock will not operate as designed. If the smallest piece upsets the balance then by logic it is equal to the largest piece making all things equal. Unfortunately, that’s not a popular opinion.

Working with others and seeing their excitement around what is happening musically both excites me and gives me great pride. Now there have been challenges along the way. A big hurdle to overcome was watching a record I participated in creating become a success without receiving any credit. With no lawyer willing to take the case, it was a very discouraging situation. In the end, my passion for music far outweighed that disappointment. I completely abandoned “chasing placements” and decided to build relationships with people “across” from me with the same passion and drive. I continued to improve my skills as a producer and furthered my education earning my MBA.

Getting to where I am professionally was not an easy road but I appreciate the journey so far. I have worked with some super talented creators and legendary artists, such as RL, Brandy Haze, and Young Steff. It has truly been an inspiration to me and fuels my fire to go further! I also created a music distribution company with my partners where we cater to independent artists world wide, distributing their music globally. What do I want the world to know? I am only in competition with myself. My only goal is to be the very best producer and creator that my gift(s) will allow me to be.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Due to the pandemic I would make my space as inviting and comfortable as possible for my guests. I have access to local chefs, caterers and honestly, there is no better place to be than the studio! That’s why I built my own. Safety first!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
