We had the good fortune of connecting with Donnie Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Donnie, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
Contrary to what we’ve been taught, I disagree with promoting the mindset to individuals of primarily focusing on their future. Before anyone throws stones at me for this comment, let’s think about it for a second. God said in His word Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. For the day is its own trouble.” Focusing on the current moment is what’s vital to achieve a successful future. Putting all your energy in your long term goals and ignoring the present moment is a huge misstep in society, and often causes frustration. I truly believe the things we are faced with, whether adversities or something we deem to be good, we must extract the value out of today, in order to make the path to our tomorrow more clear and tangible.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Misfit Turned Mogul empowers young people to take on positions of leadership in their communities, and to foster their passions into purpose. Through speaking forums, community engagement, and mentorship, we meet the youth where they are.
I prioritized putting God first, humbled myself to learn from mistakes, and focused on being intentional, being in the moment. I studied and continue to do so, to perfect my craft. It wasn’t easy but it has been worth it. Long hours, sleepless nights, and many moments of facing myself. I had to check my emotions and keep my composure, and understand how to readjust. I relish in understanding that there is always more to be done. I was never meant to fit in, God created me a Misfit on purpose, to walk in His purpose.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Starting off the weekend, with brunch at Toast on Lenox, where we can TASTE the flavors and enjoy the vibes of the South. We’ll gertickets, and VIEW the vibrant exhibit of KAWS Prints at the High Museum of Art. Then, time to get our HANDS ON the driving range at Top Golf. After, we grab another bite to eat at Five Church, the quarter roast jerk chicken is my favorite… next to let the evening festivities begin. The smoky and sweet AROMA of tobacco, leather, and wood, at Cam Newton’s Fellaship cigar lounge. And the perfect to a weekend well spent, listening to the SOUNDS of a Jazz Sunday set, at Saint James Live! Sounds like a trip to Atlanta well spent.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother and grandmother introduced Jesus into my life at an early age. Having my foundation rooted in my relationship with Him is important, and has been a major part of establishing who I am as a man today. Along this journey, many people have supported, mentored, and encouraged me, and ultimately played an impactful role in my growth. To my sisters and brother, for not allowing me to settle, and to my girlfriend for help in my mindfulness which created a higher level of self-discipline in my life. To my Misfit Turned Mogul team – words cannot express my gratitude, for your patience, your dedication, your commitment to our mission. To my community for the push that created the drive necessary to overcome the hardships I was faced with. THANK YOU ALL!
