We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ LastLaff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
I feel that many times in our hunt for success we get so caught up in the belief that success is found in money and material things. Success should be measured by the impact that we make and the lives that we help. Many years ago a quote was given to me that stated, “Don’t just be successful. Be significant”. That quote has always stuck with me. As entrepreneurs and professionals our natural desire to want more sometimes shadows the fact that our legacies aren’t solely based off what we acquire or the accolades we receive. The lives we impact and what we leave behind ultimately measures how successful we were.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve spent over half my life as a professional DJ. Within these 17 years I have developed skills in branding, marketing, and management. Coming from the small town of Abeville, AL, I wasn’t always surrounded by people who had the same drive and ambition, forcing me to take on many roles to build my brand. I’m forever grateful for that. Later I learned that you cannot do it all on your own, but I’m thankful that I learned what is required.
I’m now utilizing the skills that I acquired for myself to help others. This year I am launching Laff Media Group, which will help entrepreneurs with brand building and marketing. (Many people don’t understand the difference between the two.) We will consult, build websites, apps, create effective marketing campaigns and more. I’ve done a lot of these things for years behind the scenes working with artists and labels, but now I’m stepping out to provide these services on a larger scale. With my background rooted in reading crowds/human behavior through entertaining as a DJ, understanding of the entertainment industry through radio and artist development, and the ability to wear many hats to get a job done I feel that these skills can greatly impact positive growth for businesses and brands. My team includes photo/video guru Jeremy Tolliver of Phase 1 Photography, a new addition of a top secret coder, Big Amp my street team QB, and my entertainment publicist extraordinaire Melody Johnson has given me the necessary pieces to take my company as well as our clients beyond their wildest dreams.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m back and forth between Dothan, AL and Atlanta, but when I’m in The A food wise we’re definitely hitting Mary Mac’s, Woody’s Cheesteaks, Dat Fire Jerk Chicken.
At night if I want to hit an adult interpretive dance center we’re stopping by Allure, Diamond’s, and Blue Flame.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I couldn’t accomplish any of what I have without the support of my mother who didn’t want to see me become a DJ, but when she saw how devoted I became she pushed me. Dr. Ashbourne at Alabama State University opened my eyes to greater opportunities in music and business. Having a kid that looks at me with admiration, a little brother and sister that I have to set an example for, and 2 young girls that I mentor gives me the reminder that I need daily to be greater.
