We had the good fortune of connecting with Dezjah Hutchins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dezjah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success in my life and brand is ultimately patience. As a young entrepreneur fresh out of college, I was so anxious to jump onto the next steps of elevating my business of 5 years that I began to lose focus on the original purpose and vision of my company. I also realized that rushing the process because of where I was at mentally, left huge gaps within the authenticity of my work. I started making impulsive decisions financially, creating tasteless artwork, and even losing the brand image I wanted to conceive at the time. Months later, I learned that patience was the biggest virtue needed to continuously execute my brand and the longevity of its success. After closing shop to fully rebrand and invest in new opportunities outside my industry spectrum, I do believe the ultimate reward of being patient led me to go through and understand the motions of failure and open the doorway for my long term goals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Though my art lingers between different mediums, I believe it captivates the elegant beauty of black women within different stages of their life. Some of my most profound pieces showcase the strength women bare even within the prime of a heartbreak, life crises, or even provocative moment of their life through charm, color, and even textured objects. On the flip side of physical art, I have the ability to depict my clients life story and accomplishments through art on clothing items and accessories. Professionally speaking, getting here was not easy especially being 4 years out of the 5 involved me being a full time college student. The way I overcame these challenges of being a full time student and entrepreneur for one is balance, but also being consistent, managing my time, practicing patience, and showing dedication to what I wanted to accomplish and portray myself as in the long run. Running a business is not easy and if I haven’t learned anything else, I learned that getting help and building connections is necessary for the growth and prosperity of yourself and your business. Building those healthy connections and relationships can open up new adventures and opportunities to help enhance your goals. You never know how the unexpected places can actually place you in a setting where doors that were once closed began to open. Next I learned to celebrate my wins in the moment, because if you don’t they can just start passing you by and leave you burnt out from motivation or that element of surprises. The last lesson I learned would be not being afraid of failure or taking risks because of the fear of the outcome.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Interesting enough, a week long itinerary in Atlanta with my best friend would began in the Shops at Buckhead or Ponce City Market to ending at Chateau Elan and a night at Jeju Spa. I love to walk around the city and go sight seeing but I also enjoy wine and dining. Other interesting places to check out around the city is Atlantic Station, Piedmont Park for many outdoor pop up events, and even High Museum of Art. For night life on the other hand I would typically checkout Edgewood bars and lounges for some fun and laughter.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to recognize my family and close friends for not only being the best support system but continuously pushing me to keep going and not give up on my passion! I can’t recall one event in which they weren’t by my side helping me and that has always meant the world to me. To all my mentors and even sorority sisters, I am truly thankful to have a community here by my side encouraging me and supporting my journey as an artist. Last but not least, I would like to thank my clients, supporters, and followers who have always trusted the process and my ability to execute their vision. Dezjah Monique Collections wouldn’t be what it is is today without them and that has truly been the biggest reward!
