We had the good fortune of connecting with Devon Kendrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devon, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
You never really know wether to keep going or to give up. You have to look deep within yourself and ask yourself are you okay with what you’ve done up until this point or could you do more and live without regret. I’ve thought about giving up on alot of things in life but my determination and drive prevents me from giving up. I will literally keep trying until I can’t anymore. The big question is are you satisfied with the results? Am I content or happy with what I’ve done. If I’m not satisfied then I keep going. There’s another factor that determines that for me as well and that’s the fact that I inspire alot of people. People are watching me, I am literally motivation for alot of people and I don’t want to let them down. They are looking at me as a role model or a blueprint. That’s something that drives me to get better at my craft, or jux life experiences that allows others to overcome fear and live life to the fullest and create the life we all want for ourselves.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The art that I create is from a nostalgic perspective. I like to create art that makes me happy that uses alot of colors, is simple but complex. As a kid cartoons my thing from cartoon network, toonami, Anime, nickelodeon, Adult Swim, PBS, boomerang, etc… I like to create on a level where people can relate and share that feeling with me. Music is also a big influence on my art. I would say one of the best influences from music is the rap group The Wu-Tang Clan with the Asian/Japanese culture tied into it. I think that’s the part that separates me from others because I don’t care about being perfect or anything like that I don’t really cater to anyone. I am raw and unfiltered and I jux try to communicate and share my personality and things that made me who I am today.
I got to where I am today literally by trying. Is it easy? Heck no! But I jux went after the things that spoke and invoked feeling within me. I made it a rule to never do things I don’t enjoy doing, so if it doesn’t feel right I won’t be involved in it or do it. I refuse to settle or live a mundane life following something that doesn’t resonate with me. I’ve probably had every emotion dealing with art especially in music because you want to deliver the best product but also as an artist we share alot of things that are personal to us with the hopes that people understand and receive it as intended. Does that always happen? Of course not but we still keep doing and trying. Discipline and ambition allows me to overcome those hurdles. I jux never gave up on myself.
The lessons I’ve learned on the way is that you can’t try to be perfect and doubt and overthinking can be your downfall. You have to have a healthy balance between working and taking a break. It’s art…have fun with it…just create and don’t be afraid to be who you are and express it however you want.
I want the world to know that my brand is a representation of everyone that wants to express themselves freely and it doesn’t matter who or what you are that you have a place in this world. It’s too often that I see people unhappy with themselves, dealing with depression, anxiety and other ailments that keeps them from reaching their full potential. I want my brand to be an inspiration for them not to give up and create a space where the free spirit can be cultivated and thrive. You don’t need to be fancy and flashy and have a bunch of money to be someone important. Everyone has a purpose and belongs in this world. Coming from a place where I didn’t have much growing up and going through the things I’ve been through I want to show people that it can be done. It will take time but anything is possible when you believe in yourself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The city of Atlanta is pretty awesome. I jux moved to the area so I haven’t explore too much. Some of the places I have fell in love with is midtown, buckhead, and downtown. There is so much to do in midtown and its jux beautiful there and piedmont Park is there too. There’s plenty to eat around there n lots of friendly people. I don’t really club like most Atlantians do. I only do that when I’m performing at different venues all over the city. Spice house is a dope spot and their food is pretty good. When my friends visit I definitely put that as a go to spot for us to get into. To chill n walk around n catch a movie and jux enjoy the outdoors would be Atlantic Station. There plenty of food around there as well and the look around the area is nice! When I visited the Georgia aquarium it was dope as well. If your into animals like my bestfriend is that’s definitely a good place to go to. Atlanta seems to have a bit of everything that you would like and it’s diverse. Wether you wanna club. Vibe, chill, or look at scenery you can do it here. They have it all and more, I love the culture here. These places are hot spots in Atlanta and if you ever get a chance check them out.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The most important people that deserve alot of credit is my bestfriend keyaira J, my mother, imani Williams , Bill Graham, Oliver Taylor, Orpheus Kennedy and some close friends. Heck even a few random people I’ve met deserve a shout out! These people have helped me out tremendously with keeping my head on straight, giving me gems that help me in my skill area. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. These people have played such a vital role in my success. I am grateful because these people didn’t have to do none of the stuff that they have done for me, especially the ones that don’t know me. Technically they are investing in me and I wanna make sure they get a return on their investment.
