Meet Devon Bray | Movie Director, filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Devon Bray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process was feeling a void in my city. I am the only Black film director in Kansas doing what I am doing,

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I wrote, Directed, filmed & edited my movies & my son does the sound. which is 75% of the work. I am proud about being a finisher, i got to where I am by using what I had, where I was at & doing the best, I could with what I had to work with. doing what you are created to do is easier than doing something outside of your purpose. I overcame by never quitting. [ failure is not the end, quitting is]. the lessons are: It’s never over until it’s over, push when no one else is pushing, filling a void will set you apart and doing the work no one else wants to do. I want the world to know that I am a black filmmaker from Wichita, Ks producing some the best quality films.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well of course they would need to come to one of my movie premieres Warren/Regal Oldtown, they definitely got to stop by Kansas first & only African American owned winery [ Jenny Dawn Cellars] for the best cheesecake this side of Georgia stop buy Wichita cheesecake company which is also African American owned by a Husband & Wife. somewhere to take your fam stop by exploration place, great plains nature center & or botanica gardens. So many restaurants to choose from in Wichita just stop by the Wichita food & booze page on Facebook & you will be overwhelmed with options. all kinds of clubs & hotels in oldtown.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would have to say other than my immediate family a home builder in our city by the name of Paul Gray of [ Paul gray homes]. Paul has been essential to my movie making career over the past 2 years. All of the beautiful homes you see in my films are built by him and they are brand new homes. any location we needed Paul endeavored to make it happen just because he sees the vision & believes in what we are doing. If you know anything about filmmaking locations are key.
