We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process for starting DSB Media, Inc. stemmed from applying to graduate school and being asked “what will you do once you earn your Masters degree”? I’ve always had a soft spot for small business owners, because I come from a family of small business owners. The one thing I noticed is that the business owners in my family didn’t have a professional brand identity, so their businesses were not as prominent as they could have been. My passion for creating innovative, professional brand strategies led me to earn a Masters in Fine Arts degree with a concentration on brand identity, which in turn, led me to create my own company. Currently, we assist clients with creating a digital marketing strategy through various platforms (video/print/social media) that targets their audience in an effective manner.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I’m most proud of in my 23+ years of digital design is being able to learn new techniques in various areas, and apply those techniques into my clients’ projects. Getting to where I am professionally was not easy, it took long hours and sleepless nights to get myself to a masters level in my field. There were many challenges along the way (lack of time, being overwhelmed with work/family), but I was able to overcome those challenges by tackling them one at a time, and not try to do everything all at once. The biggest lesson I learned along the way was: “you can’t do everything by yourself. It’s ok to ask for help”. That has stuck with me for quite a while, so now when I’m faced with a difficult task, I try not to take it all on myself. I am able to recognize my weakness and ask for help.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For tourist attractions, I would take them to the usual places around Atlanta: World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium, Centennial Park, College Football Hall of Fame, Stone Mountain Park.

For eats and drink, I would definitely take them to The Vortex in Little Five Points (with the big skull in the front), Mary Mac’s Tea Room, and Eclipse di Luna in Buckhead.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my success to the three most important people in my life, my children. Without their unconditional support, love and understanding, I would not be where I am today. They have encouraged me to keep striving for greatness every project I’ve taken on, and that means the world to me. As an entrepreneur and a father, I just hope I’ve made them proud
