We had the good fortune of connecting with Denishia Macon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Denishia, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson that my experiences within my career and business have taught me is that patience and faith are vital for success. There were times when I didn’t necessarily know if a decision was the right move, but all I had was my faith to believe that whatever was for me would be for me. I’ve learned to not place my value in others’ opinions of me, because as a unique individual you realize that you’re not for everyone. Once you set a goal(s) for yourself, you take time to make small steps to achieve those goals. Having a support system when I set goals has been a monumental help because it positively encouraged me to continue forward at times when I needed an extra push.

Over the years, I’ve worked different jobs and during that time, I got the opportunity to really learn myself and what types of environment I need to be in to thrive. What may work for someone else, I learned doesn’t work for me and that what I desired more than success, is freedom over my time. I learned that time is the one asset you have that you will never get back. If you use that time to spend working on things that you’re not passionate about, you can’t earn it back. My focus now is to treasure every moment that I have to be thankful, inspire others, and use my skills in a way that’s appreciated. I hope to encourage others to start that business, turn that idea into fruition and build a support network with those that truly want to see you succeed. There is room for everyone to grow and reach their dreams, so don’t get disheartened and give up on it. Make your life fulfilling and stay focused on the things that truly matter.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business, Macon Designs, is a brand that I created from my heart and through my love for creativity. I wanted to build a platform to inspire others as well as offer my creative skills. I grew up as a young artist drawing what I saw around me, and that grew into me developing it into a business that helps other business owners develop assets for their business brands. I really enjoy the creative process of defining creative concepts and building something new with meaning.

I got to where I am currently through faith, consistency, and believing in myself. It was definitely a challenge at times, but I learned that life will give you situations and it’s up to you to push through them. I was given the vision of using my gifts to help others long ago, and with each new project I take on, I’m living in my purpose. The Macon Designs brand is not only about creativity, but about believing in your personal mission and bringing the visions within into reality, and leaving a legacy.

My goal for Macon Designs is for my brand to serve as the connection between the brands that want to impact and the consumers who are seeking these brands. We partner with emerging, unique businesses that are preparing to go to the next level by creating dynamic and impactful branding.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Columbia SC has many unique attractions that I would invite my friend along with me to enjoy. We would spend a sunny afternoon visiting the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden and checking out a couple of the museums such as the SC State Museum and the Columbia Museum of Art.

The Escapology rooms that are in downtown Columbia are an excellent way to pass time, while you solve puzzles to make it through the themed rooms to solve the mystery. They give you an hour and it’s really fun because you have to pay attention and solve clues to get to the next room until you make it to the 3rd final room.

When it’s time for lunch or dinner, I would treat them to a nice dinner at Ruth Chris Steakhouse and for lunch, we could get a delicious meal from Big Boys Original Smokehouse; the ribs and sides that they serve are amazing. Another option for a great lunch is at the Capital City Club in downtown Columbia, where you can enjoy a nice view of the city while having a delightful meal. To please our sweet tooth, we would visit the business, Cupcake down in the Vista to try one of their many delicious cupcake flavors, such as Southern Red Velvet or Peach Bellini. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes, I would like to dedicate my shoutout to a wonderful person by the name of Tomeika Bennett. I first met her when she was a mentor for the Upward Bound program when I was in high school under the TRIO programs. Even throughout my college years, she has always been a supportive and inspirational individual when I had questions about navigating education in college on to navigating the working world. She was also one of the first people to encourage me to start building a business from my graphic design freelance work. She has really been an amazing and supportive mentor and friend over the years and I’ve learned so much from her. I’m thankful to have met such a wonderful and encouraging person.
