We had the good fortune of connecting with Deejay Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deejay, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
One approach is to check if I still feel a sense of purpose despite the obstacles. If I’m passionate about my goals and see potential for progress, I choose to keeping going. Trusting my instincts and seeking advice from supportive family or friends I can receive insights to guide my decision-making process. Sometimes challenging yourself to get through makes a problem often builds character.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Over the past four years, my photography journey has evolved from a simple hobby to a deep exploration of self-expression. Starting with a basic 35mm film camera, I’ve progressed to using 120 film, unlocking new creative possibilities. This growth has expanded my artistic horizons and fueled my desire to improve. Bringing my ideas to life has given me confidence to share my unique perspective and explore new creative territories. Patience has been crucial in shaping my vision and integrating different elements into my projects. Through this journey, I’ve founded Somewhere On Earth, a multimedia collective focused on bringing innovative ideas to life. I’m driven to push boundaries and elevate both new and existing concepts to new heights.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Union Market is a great place to hang out, especially in good weather. I also enjoy late nights at spots like Eaton’s Wild Days or Harlot. And for some relaxation, I like biking from the National Mall to Georgetown.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to the homies who I’ve met through my journey of photography. Those people are Zamzam, Justin, Lorne, KJ, Trent, Eric and Larry a few notable ones on a long list of people who I really appreciate that I’ve for a while or met from photography.
