We had the good fortune of connecting with DeAngela “Dee” Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DeAngela “Dee”, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Wow! This is such a tough one that always makes me wonder the difference between perseverance and insanity. When I decided to start my business is when I began asking myself this question. Because of decisions I made in college, I had to wait for over a year after finishing Real Estate School before the Georgia Real Estate Commission would grant my license. This “year in waiting” gave me plenty of time to think about if I really wanted to pursue my passion.

Unfortunately, my story of whether to give up or keep going was just getting started. After getting my license, it was nearly a year before I sold my first home. Of course, my thoughts went to why did I bother waiting if I wasn’t going to be “successful” in this industry–that was the second time giving up popped into my mind. I decided to keep going.

The months after selling my first home were much better than the uphill battle leading up to that victory. I felt confident and that gave me the boost I needed to keep going! Soon after, I began feeling like I wasn’t getting the one on one support I desired from my then broker. I expressed my concerns and asked for their guidance; the advice was to keep trying and I should get there. I followed their advice and amped up my participation in training programs; all with no additional “success”. Again, the thought popped up to give up–this clearly wasn’t my field. I started to feel like I had crossed over from perseverance to insanity.

It was around this time that my current business partner, Caprice Little, reached out asking if I was able to assist with her clients while she was on maternity leave. I agreed. One day, while I was recapping a buyer tour, she mentioned how she wanted to expand her team in the future. I mentioned I’m looking for more support; and a beautiful relationship was born. I switched to my current Broker, PalmerHouse Properties, and hired Caprice as my mentor. For the first time, I felt that my perseverance was paying off; big time. This was in October 2019, over a year after I’d gotten my license.

I spent the next couple of months sharpening my skills and building my confidence. By December 2019, I felt ready to commit in a big way; I became a full-time REALTOR®! This was sooo exciting because when I went to real estate school in the Spring of 2017, my goal was to go full-time and replace my income from an employer with profits from my own business–goal achieved!

Buuutttt like every good story, there was a valley following this peak. In March 2020, just 3 months after I went full-time, we faced a global pandemic that stopped us all in our tracks. Overnight, the world as we knew it changed. I felt more frustrated than ever. I briefly took that as a sign that I needed to give up and accept that real estate was not for me.

Thankfully, God had a much bigger plan than my limited vision could conceive. In May 2020, I had the biggest month of my business–I SOLD OVER A MILLION DOLLARS IN REAL ESTATE!! Since then, it’s been such an amazing ride. I’ve been able to help many people achieve their real estate goals while accomplishing my business goals. My journey of ups and downs is why I go so hard for my clients; I know first hand what it’s like to have a dream and face challenges achieving it.

How do I know whether to give up or keep going? I don’t. Most would’ve given up a very long time ago. By many people’s standards, I’m insane–I did leave behind a guaranteed income for something uncertain after selling only 1 home after-all! What I do know is that persevering has paid off in a major way for me and I have zero plans of giving up on my dream any time soon!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I founded and manage a Real Estate Business servicing Metro Atlanta, Georgia. I get to help people achieve their Real Estate goals of selling, buying, and investing in Real Estate. There have been ups and downs, but I wouldn’t trade my journey for any one else’s; it made me the dynamic REALTOR® I am today.

When I look towards the future, I feel most excited to build and expand my brand to include other agents; with the ultimate desire to help even more people achieve their Real Estate Goals. Within the next few years, I plan to be an international, household name.

If there was a single takeaway from my story, it would be to keep going! Even when things look impossible, don’t give up.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am such a playful and spontaneous lady so this list could change from week to week:

-Favorite Restaurant: Bar Taco. They make one of the best margaritas I’ve tasted and have delicious street tacos and plantains.

-Favorite Brunch Spot: Atlanta Breakfast Club. Their Peach Cobbler French toast makes this Peach smile and do my food dance!

-Favorite Spa: Jeju Sauna and Wellbeing. This is my getaway within the city. I visit at least once a week for an admin day. Some weeks I’m lucky enough to go back for a day of relaxation. First of all, it’s open 24-hours a day and 7 days a week. It features a variety of saunas, a heated pool, and 3 hot tubs for just $30! They also offer additional services–highly recommend a body shampoo…it leaves me feeling so soft and relaxed!

-Favorite Lounge: Rock Steady. It’s such a grown and sexy vibe. Great place to vibe with classy singles in the city. The crowd is mostly professionals and the music and drinks are on point!

-Favorite Chill Spot: Piedmont Park. I love packing a picnic, grabbing some wine and heading to a grassy area to enjoy some sunshine. B.C. (before COVID), it was the perfect place for festivals…hopefully we’ll get to go back outdoor parties one day soon.

-Favorite Nature Trail: Silver Comet. On a warm spring or summer day, I rent a bike and ride as far as I can while enjoying the beautiful trail complete with waterfalls and historic sites. It’s the perfect place to bring your family and pets to explore.

Favorite Museum: Fernbank Museum of Natural History. Specifically, their planetarium. This is an interactive museum that makes me feel like I’m miles away from Atlanta anytime I visit. B.C., they featured multiple shows a day covering a range of topics from dinosaurs to astronomy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, God. I’m not perfect by any standards, but He keeps showing me ways to be the best possible version of myself. I’ve journaled for years as a way to commune with God and uncover the hidden secrets of my heart. In 2015, I wrote down my dream without fully realizing it was my dream. My background is Dental Management & Consulting. In 2015, I was doing everything in my power to continue climbing the corporate ladder, but that wasn’t where my blessing was. It was Real Estate, unbeknownst to me at the time. I literally wrote the vision! I wish I could say I was aware of what I was really writing. Honestly, I’d just heard someone say to write down a list of goals bigger than you can perceive as possible and that’s what I did. Years later, He brought it to pass.

Secondly, my parents. They were an example since I was a little girl. I grew up watching them run a successful, Commercial Janitorial Company. I think that’s where the entrepreneurial seed was planted. They’ve always encouraged me to pursue my passions. Looking back at it, 2015 was around the time my dad started saying how good I would be at Real Estate because of my personality and business skills. They weren’t completely sold on the idea of me going full-time when I did, but they were supportive. That type of love and support makes me feel I can do any and every thing I put my mind to.

Lastly, my business partner, Caprice and my Broker, PalmerHouse Properties. I knew I had the potential to do amazing things in this industry, I just didn’t have much guidance when I first started. Caprice helped me learn the value of critically thinking to set myself apart from the average Real Estate Agent. PalmerHouse Properties provides a place that feels like home. On Wednesdays, I get to have a call with the founder, Kevin Palmer, to receive encouragement on the Prosperity and Success of my business!
