We had the good fortune of connecting with Darius ”D-Win” Winfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Darius ”D-Win”, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thoughts for launching my own venture was to only make things when motivated by feeling. I had a degree in design for many years and was never driven to establish a label. I didn’t want to be a designer simply because I went to college. In the past, I’d craft things just because others were doing it. But now, I only create when I’m motivated by inspiration and intuition. I’ve attempted writing songs but have not been able to deliver my best. I started to note that when I crafted from a place where I felt it deeply within, the final outcome was always superior. I also had to adjust the way I thought and quit asking for feedback from those around me. People are prone to overly judge artwork. I had to believe in my own work and trust my own instincts.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others, is my point of view and my influences. I’m not doing anything to gain fame or notoriety. Coming from the mid west really impacted me because I had to work harder than others. I never had anything handed out to me. If I want something I really have to work to get it. I am most proud excited about having the resources to produce. It was very hard in the beginning coming up with ideas and not being able to make them. I took my time and explored LA , and found some great production. I got to where I am today professionally because I took a risk and left Indiana. I’m the only person in my family that left. It’s tough not having family in these different cities I live in. I took a risk in Chicago asking people to perform at certain showcases and thats how I started to get a name for myself. Going to college in Chicago played a huge reason on my success. I overcame most of the challenges by just trusting the process and letting God lead the way. Nothing in life worth having is going to be easy. Being patient is one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way. You have to keep your faith, morals, and God first no matter what is in front of you. I want the world to know that I’m releasing a album called Luxury Love this year, and that I’m releasing my first cut and sew collection this fall. Everything I do is to empower my niece and nephew.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my friend to eat Gumbo Boys in downtown LA , to The LACMA for free jazz nights , I would visit the Silverlake strip, it has some very dope stores. People tend to like tourist stuff, so I would take them to the Hollywood blvd. I would also have them visit City of Refuge for a good Sunday service and word. City of Refuge is a great reminder of how powerful faith can be in building communities and loving others. During a visit, you can truly begin to understand the culture, music and people of the city.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe it all to my mom. Without her, I can’t imagine where I’d be. A religious upbringing shaped my views, and she gave me a strong work ethic, and working multiple jobs just to provide for us. I never had anyone make that many sacrifices for me. She was a role model for me, showing me that it’s possible to do more than anyone ever expects. She dedicated her life to raising me right, and I’m forever grateful for her influence.
