We had the good fortune of connecting with Cristina Delgado-Fuller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cristina, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always been involved in the arts for as long as I can remember. With my dad having the talent to draw and paint, I naturally became interested in the field and began drawing for fun. While involving myself in artistic practices throughout school, I was introduced to many different mediums and forms of art. Photography has always been my main passion, but then it later evolved into FX makeup. I have always enjoyed film and attempting to create imagery that I would see in my mind. Photography and special effects makeup are great combination for attempting to achieve my artistic goals.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being both a makeup artist and photographer, the possibilities can get overwhelming- In a good way!. I always have so many ideas and inspiration from movies, music, and stories. Some of my main inspirations come from Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, gothic/renaissance art, many types of films, and Ancient Egyptian culture. I have a love for so many different things, that I can sometimes lose my way in how to convey certain ideas. This is a challenge I am excited to tackle because it pushes me to really think on how I can incorporate my style along with everything that inspires me.

Currently, in my career, I am working as an SFX artist in the film industry. I help create molds, prosthetics, and sometimes apply on set. Getting to this point took me a few years. I slowly worked my way up by starting to do makeup as a hobby and helping out at haunted houses. The challenge during this time, was college along with the loss of my mother. I was in school for fine art photography and it began to take a lot time and energy to finish and graduate with an exit show I would be proud of. With school stress and my mom being sick, it set me back mentally and artistically. After graduating, I took some time away from photography so I could find the love for it again.
There was a time period where I had also stopped doing makeup. I felt like I set myself back with such a long pause on this hobby when one day I realized, this is something I really wanted to continue and possibly do as a career. As I put more time back into makeup, I began meeting more artists in the industry and starting to help them in their shops. Starting a new career in makeup, I kept up with my photography and did photoshoots for fun and any clients that hired me. Now, with the more makeup FX knowledge I have gained, I have the capability to do and create even more for my photoshoots. Having complete control on how everything looks is what can set me apart from other photographers. Rather than hiring a props person, costumer, artistic director, makeup artist etc., I can take the lead. Even though I always love collaborating with fellow artists!
Along the way I have learned that I have chosen the right path in my artistic career. Every time I go on set, I am reminded that this is the goal. This is the job I enjoy. Yes, there are always challenges and stressful scenarios when it comes to working in the industry, but at the end of every production, or spending all day in the shop covered in dust and silicone, I go home feeling good and proud of my job.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living near the Atlanta area, there are a lot of different types of things to do. Personally, I am not about the city.. So, I would probably take my friend up to the mountains of North GA and visit some of the little towns on the way like Dahlonega and get some fudge, maybe stop by a winery. Another day maybe we will go tubing in the Chattahoochee river (if its warm of course). Visiting some local coffee shops or boba tea is always a good time. I love going to Divine Coffee, Hansel & Gretel, and KungFu Tea. Ramen will also be in the list. I would definitely take her to Kuyramen and sit in one of their honeycomb booths, Atlanta always has a lot of pop up bars, exhibits, and events. I would look up what was in town. Currently, if my best friend was here now, I would take her to the Atlanta Art Expo where they have the King Tut and Van Gogh immersive exhibits. The High Museum of Art will also be an option. Lastly, I would love for us to both go to Eclipse de Luna. I have never been, but I heard they have dance nights!
