We had the good fortune of connecting with Corey Brister : AKA Shump and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Corey Brister, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind my business was to be totally different while providing a service that anyone could do. Anyone can take photos of someone and edit them and make them look beautiful. But with my Photography business what makes it different is the experience. I not only create a still picture of my clients, but I also provide a timeline of photos and videos that then creates a story of there shoot. So all in all, the true thought process consisted mostly of just setting myself apart from others and being different.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So my professional career is a world wind to say the least. I want the younger generation to understand giving up isn’t an option. I’ve literally worked at the very top when it comes to having a corporate job all the way down to sweeping floors in a warehouse. Your lowest point is what builds character and carries you through life. I say all of that to provide insight on my own personal experience when it comes to having a professional career. I got to the point where I am in life now because of perseverance. I’ve been told no more than I can explain. Dream jobs taken out of my hands because I didn’t meet the criteria of what they wanted. But even with being told no I continued to apply and reach out and in doing so I landed something that made me happy. I now work in the heart of Atlanta in a building that overlooks the beautiful city of Atlanta. Stability is everything while trying to transition to living solely off of your business. It’s nothing wrong with doing both do what works for you, but make sure there’s some type of stability so that everything makes sense in the end.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So on Monday I would take them to Views Bar Downtown, on Tuesday we would go to either Traffik or Lilys in Buckhead, on Wednesday we would just chill on Thursday we would go to Cirque and do drunk karaoke and on Friday that’s when the real fun begins. Friday we would go to Views or Goldroom on Saturday we would go to the biggest party in the city which is SNL. Then on Sunday we would go to BarVegan.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my on going success to my mother. She always made a way out of no way while proving the statistics of what single mothers were limited to wrong. I think about the life she gave us while sacrificing her own dreams and aspirations for us to live our lives. For that I’ll always try to live my life for not just myself, but also so that someday I can make her proud. So this one is for you mom and many more recognitions to come in the future.
