We had the good fortune of connecting with MYNDS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MYNDS, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I feel that taking risks is the only way to push yourself to be better at anything you do. It’s the evolution of inner growth within yourself. My career would not be moving in the direction it has been without taking risks. I am originally from Baltimore and moving to Atlanta was not an easy transition for me. Coming from a place where I know every one to a place where I know only hand few of people, I took that risk. I got uncomfortable. I did the grunt work. I sacrificed the norm for something unfamiliar. And that was the best decision I could have made for myself and for anyone else that has hesitations on moving/getting into a new career. Take that leap of faith. You won’t regret it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One thing about the music industry I’ve learned is that you will make it far with the ability to wear many hats. While living in Baltimore, I sharpened my skills in music production, record engineering, and DJing. I worked with whoever whenever. After a good couple years of practice, I took my skills down to Atlanta. I interned at Astro Studios, ran sessions out of various other studios in the city (HotBeats, Street Execs, Kollab Studios, etc.), and DJ’d local clubs and bars. I spent my first year grinding hard and building relationships. It wasn’t easy. I had to relearn a lot. Break old habits I thought were good but were not for the new environment I was in. I had to adapt. But luckily, I adapt quickly. Now, when I walk into a session with any artist, my #1 rule for myself is to leave my ego at the door. The goal is to make the best music possible no matter what. Im not the star of the show; the music is. And the people I work with know that. DJ’ing in front of a new crowd that does not know me exhilarates me instead of intimidates me. I find confidence in myself when Im challenged. Its the core behind who I am as a Music Producer, Recording Engineer & DJ.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my friends come into town, we usually do a little tour. For fun things to do (besides sitting in the studio with me all day lol), I’ll take em down Little Five Points for some good art and thrift shopping. Im big on food, especially African dishes. I love to go to Little Lagos off of Buford Highway. They’re meals are great, as well as the music they play. Hopping on a Lime scooter on a sunny day down the Atlanta Beltline is also cool too. Great art and cool drink spots can always be found up and down the Beltline. If you want some good vibes over the weekend, Tastee Spoon is a cool place to check out. Its a little ways out of the city, but with the Caribbean dishes mixed with a fire DJ spinning good tunes, you’ll definitely love it.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and friends have always been supportive on my journey into the music career. Since 2013, my sisters have been my biggest fans watching me make my first ever beats on FL Studios. My good friend Chinazo would spread the word about my DJ skills only after a couple of weeks of me messing around on Serato and having downloaded maybe 50-60 songs. I would lean on them anytime I doubted myself or came to some weird conclusion that I was not good enough. My right hand producer partner Big O and I would have talk for hours about the “dream” and the “vision” for our career. Now we’re living it and it still feels so fresh and brand new to us. To anyone thats given me advise, appreciated the art, or has been inspired, I thank you.
