Meet Chloe Hui | Graphic Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chloe Hui and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chloe, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is definitely my support system of friends and family. Throughout my time at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), I was able to meet a great group of friends in Graphic Design, and I honestly could not have made it through without them. There were nights where we would be working on projects until 6am, but knowing that your friends are going through the same struggles as you are, gives you that motivation you need. If I was sitting alone in my room working on my projects, I could easily just let myself curl up in bed for a nice nap and wake up hours later. When working with friends, the energy never dies. They were always down to bounce around ideas, break out into song and dance, or go on one of our many food runs. I’m also grateful for my teammates from the SCAD Swim Team. Waking up for an intense early morning practice after a long night of working is never easy, but my team was always there to push me and keep me going. Because of them, I was able to maintain a positive mindset that led me to success.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love to create art that makes people smile. I tend to use a lot of bright colors and illustrations in my work because I think that combination can really bring a design to life. My passions lie specifically with package design. I’m sure a lot of you have gone to the store and bought something just because you thought the packaging was really cute or pleasing to look at. It made you happy right? Well that’s exactly the kind of feeling that I want to create through my designs. I think what sets me apart from others is my obsession with the little things. I love every finite detail that goes into design. Whether it be the kerning of type or the exact measurements of the tabs on a package, I need to make sure that everything is perfect. Math was my favorite/best subject in school, so I think having such a calculated mindset is what makes me so detail oriented.
During my time at SCAD, I discovered that I love to design for a younger audience, which makes sense because I just love cute things. Slap a face on something squishy and round and I’m sold! Now I’m proud to say that I’m working as a Packaging Intern at Spin Master for the Games Department. I’m doing exactly the kind of work that I want to do, and there’s no better feeling than that. Applying for jobs right out of graduation was anything but smooth sailing. I learned that art truly is subjective, so you shouldn’t let rejections get you down. The perfect job for you isn’t going to come on the first try, but if you keep trying, it will eventually come to you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Savannah, Georgia is probably one of the most beautiful places you could ever visit. If my best friend were to visit, I would definitely take them around to see all of the SCAD buildings, have a picnic at Forsyth Park, take a walk down River Street, or drive over to Tybee Island for a beach day. There are so may options for food in Savannah, but hopefully we would be able to attend a food truck festival at Daffin Park. If not, then I’d most likely take them to Clary’s for breakfast or Little Duck Diner for brunch, Kim Chi II or Fire Street Food for lunch, YATAI ramen + yakitori, Fire Street Food, or The Vault Kitchen + Market for dinner, some Stoner’s Pizza Joint half baked chocolate chip cookies for dessert, and maybe end the night with some Spudnik potato bowls as a late night snack. Aside from the food though, I think my favorite thing to do in Savannah is to just drive down the streets that are lined with trees with Spanish Moss hanging from them.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to my Kimberly Huffstetler, my high school AP Art teacher and Art Mom. It was through taking her Drawing 1 class my sophomore year that I discovered my love of being an artist. She introduced me to new mediums, lifted me up when I doubted myself, and pushed me to create work I never new I was capable of. Because of her, I was able to submit a portfolio that got me into SCAD. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.
