We had the good fortune of connecting with Chila Lynn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chila, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Cuba, I started to study classical piano when i was 5, I graduated from music school at 18 and then I went to Paris to complete my superior studies. Then almost at the same time I had to fly to Spain where I signed my first record deal a year after, I had to make a good balance between my superior studies and the recording my first album that was called Real Woman. I am also a songwriter since I was 13, but for that first album I had the incredible opportunity to have great artists like Pink, Jill Scott, James Morrison, Nikki Costa and others that wanted me to have theirs songs on my first album so I had to put aside my own songs cause I really wanted to have that honor of singing their songs and give them my own sound. After that I started to do live tours across Spain and the rest of Europe. I also had the great blessing of giving the singing voice to a Disney character in the Spanish version of The princess and the frog, I was the singing voice of the lead character Tiana. It was such and honor to be the first Disney’s princess of color and as a child I always identified myself with that mentality of working hard to make your dreams come true, something that I shared with the character I played. Some years later I wanted to record in Spanish cause the first album was all in English, so I flew back to my home town, Havana, Cuba to record my second album Amor y Miel, which means love and honey. For this album I had my premiere as a songwriter and also added songs of latin and also cuban songwriters and artists that I’ve always admired too, like Pablo Milanes, Jose Antonio Mendes, Raul Torres and Pavel Nuñez. Beside that i have great duets on the album with cuban singers like Omara Portuondo and Leoni Torres, who are very important in the latin world. After that I threw a bottle to the sea with a letter I wrote for a legendary african goddess of the seas and the letter made it to the states. It made it to the florida shores of Melbourne, where it made it to the hands of a reporter of Florida today and then the article spread and a lot of important medias like CNN, Fox and New York Daily covered the new and published my letter. In which I wrote about my dream to come here to the states and bring my music here. A few months ago I took the big step to come here where almost all the main artists I’ve feed off during my whole life were born. Artists like Stevie Wonder , Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Brian Mcknight, Beyonce, Morgan Wallen, Charlie Puth, Shawn Mendes and Usher. I love Pop and R&B, Soul, Motown music, Country and Latin music, so thats what I like to do and listen to. Now I am here and in July 2022 I released my first EP here in the US, which is called Unleash Mode. I will film the video clip in a couple of days, I am having the support of companies like Ingrooves and Universal for the distribution of it, I am already receiving offers from labels here and most important of all I am having great feedback from my audience so far. I am very excited about it and I believe all that I have done made me who I am today, all the risks taken and not being afraid to go for what I want and work hard for it. Also the constant nourishment of different cultures and places I’ve been. I believe that I am an important mix of everything I’ve been through and done.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My music is fresh and natural, it comes from my heart to yours. I am proud to say that I work hard to bring the best sound I can to the people but most of all I am honest with what I do. If I have to pick a slogan to describe my brand would be -what you hear is what it is- I don’t make up things too much cause I like to be and sound just like who I am. It took me a lot to understand that being myself has nothing wrong. Mostly in a world that in my humble opinion is focused on a very materialistic way of living and being. People are always adding up and trying to fix themselves to fit in. While they do that I try to be simply me and have no barriers in my communication with everybody. Of course I support the self improvement but for me it is about to be better without losing yourself in the process. My story is a story of embracing and unleashing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am not a complicated person. I love to have fun but I am very healthy with my fun. I am always making jokes and singing. I love amusement parks like Six Flags and trying new foods, any restaurant with a new type of food is good to go. I heard there is a new restaurant/bar in Georgia with 787-foot glass bridge, suspended over Dashbashi Canyon, that is a must go definitely for me. Open door activities are my faves but I also love a good Jam Session in the downtown. Any place where they are playing music live is always awesome too.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God, my parents, my music teachers, my true friends, my new team here in the states, my new manager Lee Johnson. All the media that supports me and of course my fans. All the people that in a way or another supports me and my music and that really identify themselves with my message.
