We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheryl Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cheryl, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Giving up is never an option. This life journey, and especially the entrepreneurial journey, is one of highs and lows, ups and downs, accomplishments and disappointments but in the process of it all, I’m learning to pivot, slow down, and even change course when necessary, and I encourage others to do the same. There is no comparison to the satisfaction you feel when using your gifts to serve others. One should never give up on that.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my business, Simple Order Professional Organizing, after discovering a deep passion for creating simple systems to maintain a clutter-free home. From an early age, I have always desired everything to be “nice and tidy” but as I got older and settled into life as a wife, Mom, and ministry leader, all while working full-time, my once tidy home went from calm to chaos. I was maintaining the appearance of neat spaces on the surface but inside closets, drawers, my pantry and laundry room, things were chaotic. I had accumulated so much stuff over the years and never taken the time to let go of items that no longer served me. I was spending a considerable amount of time trying to manage excess amounts of food, clothes, appliances, electronics, toys, and paperwork which left very little time for planning out my schedule, meal prep, family time, self-care and simple day-to-day tasks. I had zero work-life balance and I was always exhausted. And then, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I tapped into my innate tidying ability and decluttered all my clothing, invested in custom closets, and set up systems to give every article of clothing a home. This is how I began the journey of releasing all the things holding me back from the life I wanted to live. I never realized how decluttering could make such a huge impact in my life. After decluttering my closet, I was motivated to tackle other spaces and share with other busy Moms and individuals this newfound passion for organization and the freedom that comes along with simply “letting go”. I can completely relate to the overwhelm that busy Moms and professionals experience every day and my mission is to partner with and serve those who need a little extra support in eliminating clutter to create space for the things in life that matter most.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, I live an hour outside of the city so I don’t frequent the hot spots very often. If I had the opportunity to spend the week in ATL with my bestie – food, shopping and experiences would be at the top of the agenda. Having the freedom to explore and take in the beauty and awe of the center of the South would be a true delight. We’d definitely want to experience downtown ATL and take in the skyline, but also spend a few days in Midtown to checkout Atlantic Station, maybe a museum, catch a show at the Fox Theatre and even walk through Piedmont Park. Shopping in Buckhead would be a must but also taking time to stop at as many local small businesses and restaurants as possible. I always feel strong connections in the “Mom and Pop” establishments. In my opinion, those local business owners are the most exciting and intriguing people in the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a big shoutout to two organizations that are near and dear to my heart – The National Association of Black Professional Organizers (NABPO) and Black Girls Who Organize (BGWO). These organizations have worked tirelessly to create space and build community for women of color in the organizing industry. My membership and affiliation with NABPO and BGWO has afforded me an opportunity to engage with and glean from top-notch and highly proficient industry professionals and I and my business has grown considerably due in great part to the NABPO and BGWO communities.
