We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlos, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
To be honest I don’t know if there is a such thing as balance. When you truly want to be great at something it will come with some sacrifice. I believe there will be times when you will be great in some areas of life and not so great in others. However, we never turn our back on family and we always should do our very best to include them in our dreams/vision. My mentor had a quote for me that I still remember to this day which is “You can’t be normal and great at the same time.”

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The name of my business is More Than A Job,LLC. I came up with that to help people understand that life is worth more than a paycheck and to find your purpose. Under my business I am blessed to be able to cover the Charlotte Hornets and I also have a platform “Cross The Line Podcast” where I travel the country interviewing entrepreneurs, mentors, and athletes about their journey. I also released my very first book under my business titled “F*ck School Life Is Your Best Teacher!” The journey hasn’t been easy but my faith and belief in myself has kept me going. I just want people to understand that you achieve to the levels that you believe in. Your mind is a powerful tool if you utilize it properly.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would say we would go eat at a restaurant called Charlene’s Home Cooking. Some of the best food you will ever taste. Next we would go grab something from Big Ben’s Desserts. I’m not the type to go out all the time but we could go check out this place called Vibez it’s a nice laid back lounge.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Outside of my family the person I would give a lot of credit to is my friend/mentor Ben Hall. People would always give me words of encouragement but nobody ever spoke to me the way he did. It was the first time in my life where every word that he spoke started to resonate in a profound way. He truly taught me about believing in myself and going after my dreams/vision. He saw things in me that I didn’t see in myself and it changed my life. I interviewed him on my platform “Cross The Line Podcast” and the episode is called “One Man One Stove.” I still go back and watch/listen to this conversation because it changed my life.
