We had the good fortune of connecting with Byron Jamal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Byron, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I was pastoring, there were so many people who would come into my office to talk about things they didn’t feel comfortable addressing anywhere else. These were things I couldn’t even preach in the pulpit. I wanted to be more relevant and accessible to everyday people who the church might shun or cast away. I decided to start my own Love Coaching business to help people connect to their highest potential in self-love, love with others, and spiritual love. Now, I help people with depression, relationship challenges, and connecting to their spiritual source. To help even more people, I used my English degree from Norfolk State University (HBCU) and began writing books about love. As I finish my sixth book, I am encouraged by how my written work can help people long after I leave this physical existence.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Most people haven’t heard of a Love Guru before. A guru is considered a “dispelled of darkness.” In my work, I dispel the darkness that people have about love. Love is a word that brings varying emotions: joy and fear, bliss and anxiety, jubilation and doubt. I help people find the light in love, to see it for the brilliant blessing that it is. I didn’t learn this from my time in seminary or pastoring alone. Many of my teachings come from lessons learned from overcoming my own battles with depression, suicide, abuse, and low self-love levels. The reasons I have written six books on love is because of my journey. Coming back from some of the darkest and lowest places of my life has shown me the path back to life and love. Now I can share my insights and wisdom with others. My message is simple: You are worth the love you seek, so seek higher love. I believe in the power of love to change lives, communities, and nations.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I take everyone to Poor Calvins, an Asian-American fusion restaurant that has the best food and drinks in the city. It is a hop and skip down from Midtown, which has diverse food and people to suit all tastes. I love the festivals and cultural events that happen inside of Piedmont Park. And, if no major event is happening there, it is still an amazing place to connect with nature and other amazing souls. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I must give credit to every spiritual leader who has gone before me that walked in agape love, from Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi to Jesus and Michael D. Beckwith. I am always grateful for my adoptive parents who show me that love is a choice that we can make every day.
