We had the good fortune of connecting with Bryan SilverbaX and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bryan, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I am not sure that I have hit the peak, but for my current level of success I would have to say the most import thing would be the three T’s. I share my thoughts on the three T’s to anyone that asks about how to improve any aspect of what they are doing. I am a firm believer in the T’s. Here they are: You have to be TEACHABLE, TENACIOUS and TALENTED…. and in that order. People would rather work with a person who is teachable and willing to listen over a super talented person that acts like they know everything. I am always looking for ways to learn. With the three T’s i think that everyone can max out their potential.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel that I have always been attracted to illustration. As a professional comic book cover artist that is working in 2023 I feel that my work stands out for use of black in my pieces. I really go heavy on the ink. I really like there to be a close balance of black and white on my pieces with its complete. I think having a closer balance makes the illustration more interesting, not to mention that it makes for a more dynamic piece for someone to frame up. I have been told that people enjoy my ink work and my cover composition and that feels good, because I put a lot of thought into those areas. When I am tasking with creating a cover image for a comic book I try to think what would I be able to do on the cover that would force a custom in a comic book shop to stop scanning all the cover and pick mine up. I am sure I don’t always nail the landing but I can promise I put thought into why I did what I did. We live and learn.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have a large amount of social anxiety so I don’t have a great deal of experience to pull from, but living in metro Atlanta there is no storage of awesome stuff. I really enjoy attending Braves games in Cobb County and with The Battery (an area of shops, restaurants, bars and entertainment right outside of the stadium) right there you really could have full day of fun. I have had some good experiences with The Vortex, outstanding burgers and intimate stand up comedy, that’s a win win. Anyone that knows me knows that I love my nachos and I am always down for chips and toppings. I eat nachos everywhere I go. I have to say that one of my current places for good nachos is Twin Peaks, its not really a nacho joint but their nachos are great.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This is hard for me, pointing out a singular person or moment is impossible. I will say that the supporters of my work is what forces me to get being better, I don’t want to let people down. I battle with imposter syndrome a lot but then I think about how my supporters see me and I feel that they believe that I am better than I really am: and it’s my job to get myself to the level I think that see. With that cycle of thought I will as keep improving. I feed off of the support that I get and I just don’t want to let their belief in me down, so I have to be better. So thank you to all the Silverbackers!
