We had the good fortune of connecting with Britney Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Britney, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?

I think many are unaware of the how much time and artistry is put into developing food content. It’s extremely detailed and requires a science along with a lot of love. Many would think, SCIENCE? Yes, science has a lot to do with how recipes are formulated. It takes many trials and errors to develop the prefect sauce or dish of any kind. Food is also EXTREMELY expensive right now, especially when you’re using grade -A products.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business Miss Bees Foodie Recipes was born in 2018 when I decided to take my “hobby” seriously. I have also had a passion for the culinary arts. It was embedded within me. Both my maternal and paternal sides were very big on cooking. My maternal side’s family also had their own culinary company. At a very young age, I was introduced to true authentic southern home cooking and how to make EVERYTHING from scratch.

I am most excited about my seasoning and infused olive oil brand! It took months curating the blends and tasting various oils to find the perfect ones for my brand. Which I did, but sometimes hiccups happen especially regarding manufacturing. There has been a delay with launching.

This is not easy, especially balancing businesses, full-time work, motherhood, and just life. It can be overwhelming. Many entrepreneurs paint this glamorous picture of owning your own business and that isn’t the full truth. You must truly work hard to find your flow and develop the best time management plan to assist in navigating your life and business. I am glad that I was able to take a step back and realize that I needed to pour more into not only my business but myself.

I begin meditating and journaling. I wrote affirmations out and would speak them daily. Such as ” I am a successful business owner”, “my customers continue to shop with me daily”, and “I know this is going to be an excellent day for me and my business.” As I spoke it out loud, I began to envision it and BELIEVED IT. This journey with my business helped mold me into a better woman overall. It assisted in me pushing myself to limits I did not know existed. My words would just be sure this is something for you and YOU ALONE. Your business and how you conduct it is a TRUE show of character. I wouldn’t trade this level of hustle or self-confidence for anything!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, I would like to shout out to The She Shed which is a place developed by my best friend Lashawn Campbell. It is a safe place to allow women to be their unapologetic selves. To speak, cry, and be happy without restrictions. She holds amazing Zoom sessions with these women to allow them to be in contact with other women with similar stories. Especially in today’s climate this form of therapy is needed!

I also would like to Shoutout my long-time best friend Shonkeya Shaw, owner of KeyaDidItBeautynBrowz. She is an AMAZING individual who decided to finally kick her dream into full gear. She is a full-time employee, mother, wife, and BOSS. Her work ethic is unmatched. She is extremely professional and is in a class of her own when it comes to the make-up game.
