We had the good fortune of connecting with Astin Rocks. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Astin, how do you think about risk?
No risks, no reward. Period. You won’t grow, from just thinking about the risk and it’s cons. Honestly, I have found that in the film & entertainment industry, hirers are more apt to pay attention to you when they see how much initiative you take on your own endeavors. At that point, you really have the potential to leverage your potential.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ll keep it short. Everyone’s interpretation of easy is different. I’ll say that my work is “easy” because I want to do it. This time last year, March 2020, my team and I fundraised for Season 2 of Real Fakes. The pandemic hit a week later. We watched the climate and decided it was safe to shoot in November. Now, we’re entering sound mixing and getting ready to release new episodes. Lesson: surround yourself with teammates that are as serious as you about getting the work done. Because the work will get done. Real Fakes explores the tense relationship dynamics between Black and Asian Americans with knockoff luxury in the background. It’s funny as hell and I’m proud to show you what we’ve done. Ultimately, RF gave me the confidence to dip back into my other media disciplines. So yeah. I’m winning. Can’t wait to show you more.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Favorite Spots? I’m lucky to live near Bartaco, Thumbs Up, Food Terminal and Urban Grind. But when I’m feeling fancy, I visit my friends in Little 5. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
