We had the good fortune of connecting with Asiah Wilborn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Asiah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business began during my diverse work experiences in various settings, including schools, pediatric clinics, and virtual contracting companies. Despite the variety, I never felt fulfilled and often experienced burnout. This left me yearning for the ability to manage my own day-to-day activities. I realized I wanted to open my private practice when I got accepted into graduate school.

To prepare, I immersed myself in learning about the process. I listened to numerous podcasts and read countless articles on starting a private practice. I was careful not to rush the process, taking my time to ensure everything was in place before I opened my practice. When the time was right, I was ready to launch, fully confident in my decision and prepared for the journey ahead.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Expressive Pediatric Therapy is a community-based, pediatric therapy practice located in Gwinnett County, Georgia. We specialize in child-led, play-based approach services for children and also contract with local school districts in need of speech therapists, for in-person and virtual school settings. We are committed to providing effective therapy services that value and honor each child’s strengths while providing support and guidance toward authentic and meaningful communication. I am most proud of the positive impact I’ve made on my clients’ lives, helping them achieve their communication goals and gain confidence. Additionally, I’m proud of creating a supportive and welcoming environment where both clients and team members feel valued and empowered. Getting to where I am now professionally was not easy.
I overcame obstacles in my business by pivoting and adding additional services to meet the evolving needs of my clients. This flexibility allowed me to better serve my community and ensure the continued growth and success of my practice.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Gwinnett County, and I wanted to show her the best time ever with a fun and girly twist, here’s what our itinerary would look like: First, we’ll start the day with a luxurious spa treatment at Spa Land and Sauna in Duluth, where we can enjoy saunas, hot tubs, and various treatments. Then we’ll head to The Breakfast Bar in Duluth for a delicious and Instagram-worthy brunch. Next, we’ll spend the afternoon shopping at The Webb Gin in Snellville, where we can hunt for cute outfits and accessories. Then, we’ll enjoy a chic dinner at Escovitchez in Snellville, known for its trendy ambiance and delicious Jamacian and Caribbean dishes. We’ll end the night sipping on craft cocktails at the Overstory Rooftop in Duluth, perfect for a stylish night out.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to my incredible family for encouraging me throughout all my endeavors. I would be nowhere without your unwavering support. A special thank you to my husband for his understanding and positive pep talks on the days I doubted myself. Your love and encouragement mean the world to me!
