We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angel, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I am a mother of four, amazing humans I refer to them as my mighty men of valor. The most important thing I’ve done as a parent is to model for my children what it looks like to “step outside the box” and to take roads less traveled. I lived out loud in front of my sons and encouraged them to do the same. I allowed them to talk and share their thoughts. I encouraged them to join teams and organizations they were truly interested in versus the more popular ones. I believe that watching me live what I encouraged them to do gave them permission to get out the box while making them feel safe and comfortable in their own skin while doing it.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The name of my business is Speak Up Sis®. It is an empowerment, media company that creates and provides spaces and opportunities for everyday people to share their stories to inspire the stories of others. What sets Speak Up Sis, LLC apart from other businesses in this industry is our focus on the everyday person. While other platforms are looking to connect with celebrities and influencers with big numbers, we hunt for and focus our attention on the people doing amazing work that we believe the world needs to know. In Proverbs 11:25, the scripture says, “A generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself.” I created for others in Speak Up Sis® what I needed for myself – a safe place to acknowledge, own, embrace truth and to open my mouth to give voice to it in order to heal.

I have gotten where I am today in business by taking risks most people are not willing to take. I resigned from an almost 20-year career in education and advocacy and “walked onto the water” with the Lord. In fact, I didn’t know I would become an entrepreneur. I just knew I was called to do and be so much more than what I was doing at the time. No, it was not and is not easy, but it is worth it. If you cannot tell yet, I am a God-girl. I overcome the challenges by trusting that God would never lead me astray. I also keep a teachable spirit. I am always trying to learn new things. Although I have an assistant, work with a studio team and brand agency, I know how to do everything they do, albeit, not at the same skill level, but I can do it because I started by teaching myself how to do everything before I could pay anyone else to do the work. Most importantly, I keep my heart postured up right before God and pray often.

I’m a relatively new entrepreneur. I’ve been doing this work since August 2018, so I am really green and have so much to learn. However, so far, I have learned that I don’t know everything, and I can’t do everything, therefore, it is okay to delegate. In fact, it becomes necessary to delegate in order to continue growing and scaling your business. I have learned to keep my focus on the Lord and the work He has called and allows me to do instead of focusing on the people. Actually, I’m probably still working on that one, and maybe the most important lesson I have learned and accepted is that there is no way for me to fail unless I quit.

I want people to know that Speak Up Sis, LLC is the premiere supporter of kingdom visions. I want to see everyday people win, and I rejoice when they rejoice!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh my…my favorite spots in the city? This one maybe a little difficult to answer because I prefer to visit family and friends and “shoot the breeze” at the house and cookout in the backyard, marathon watch something like Grey’s Anatomy while eating popcorn and drinking wine, lol.

However, when I do decide to go beyond the backyard, I enjoy brunching. One of my favorite spots is a place on Cascade Ave. called Garden Parc. The food is delicious and the energy is amazing. Table25 Fork + Wine is another quaint spot further north in Douglasville that usually has some type of live musical performance. I also enjoy hiking, so we’re definitely going up Stone Mountain to get a bit of exercise. Clubbing isn’t my thing, but I would totally see if there is a performance I want to see at the Fox Theatre.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to recognize my mother, George Ann Harper, and give her a great deal of credit in my success story. I saw the face and the character of God through my mother before I ever picked up a bible. Just in case I have not said it enough, thank you and I love you mama.
