Meet Angel Mackey | Licensed Stylist/ Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel Mackey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I moved here to Atlanta 4 years ago from Texas, I knew that Atlanta is often seen as a trendsetter in fashion, Music, & style. Atlanta celebrates individuality and self expression. I felt like there was a gap in the market for a salon that specifically specializes in both Trendy Cuts and personalized colors. BTB Stands for Beyond The Basic, and I wanted our Salon to differentiate itself from competitors and attract clients seeking a comprehensive and on trend hair experience!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a hairstylist, I sought to carve out a distinct niche by specializing in the art of hair coloring techniques, and delivering edgy, customized haircuts. Recognizing the transformative power of color and the impact of a unique haircut, I aimed to offer clients a tailored experience that reflects their individual style and personality. By honing my skills and staying abreast of the latest techniques I aspire to provide clients with innovative and personalized looks that set them apart from the crowd, earning a reputation for creativity and expertise in the process. Over the course of almost 30 years in the hairstyling industry, I’ve encountered numerous challenges that tested my resolve and commitment. From navigating being a Mother, a Wife, personal setbacks and professional obstacles, there were moments when giving up seemed like the easiest option. However, I persevered by reminding myself of the passion and purpose that initially propelled me into this career. I realized that setbacks are inevitable, but they also present opportunities for growth and resilience. By staying true to my vision and focusing on the legacy I wanted to build. I found the strength to overcome adversity and emerge stronger than ever. My journey serves as a reminder to fellow stylists that perseverance and determination are essential ingredients for success in this ever evolving industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would like to eat 9 mile station on the rooftopHangout at the belt line. Love going to the Mablehouse for outside concerts. City winery is the place to be… Also would definitely take them to my church Word Of Faith Bishop Dale Bronner.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am a firm believer without Christ being at the core center of my life none of this would be possible. I know that God chose me to be in this position so I’m grateful that he trusted in me! I would also like to thank my Amazing Husband Curtis Mackey for being my partner, protector, and the one who stood beside me every step of the way. My Family of course have allowed me to become the business woman I am! Kaleena Duru owner of KBB Salon who I worked for as a Salon Manager. I fell in love with the hair industry again and found my passion to open another Salon.
