We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Rose Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea Rose, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue this career because I love to read, but I wanted more stories that featured a main character who looked like me. I pursued this career because, growing up when I would read one of my favorite books to escape. I could never honestly imagine myself as the main character. I want to give that possibility to the new generation growing up.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, I am an indie author, and I have to say that I’m proud that I’m being consistent and that I am getting my work out there. Finishing a book is a task within itself, but getting it out to market regardless of how it sells is an accomplishment that not everyone gets to, and I’m proud of myself that I’ve gotten to this point. I consider myself still climbing that hill, and it’s not easy. I face multiple challenges daily, whether it’s time management or affordability writer’s block. Being an indie author, everything is sort of just on my shoulders, and I’ve had to learn to relax and take it day by day. I’m a planner by nature, so I’ve had to adopt that mindset regarding my writing because this is another full-time job. I’ve learned to create a timeline or an outline and stick to it. I’ve learned to network out instead of always trying to network up, and Google is my best friend. I’ve had to grow a very thick skin regarding reviews. I’ve learned to look at all constructive criticism with a grain of salt and with the mindset that regardless of the fact if they like my work, that does not mean they dislike me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When people come to visit me, I like to take them to the closet winery. I like large outdoor spaces and a good glass of white wine!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give this shout-out to one of my best friends, Christina, I’ve known her for about ten years, and when we both realized we had a shared love of reading, we started a two-person book club. She was there with me at my first Comic Con. She proofread all of my books and work, and whenever I’m feeling down about my writing, she’s always there to tell me I’m amazing, and I am so thankful to call her my friend!
