We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Terrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
Most important thing I feel I have done as a parent is knowing my value and worth and choosing me. The decisions you make, impact them. Good and bad. How they respond to your decisions, sometimes will let you know if have strayed from your purpose.
As a mom, to a beautiful daughter, it’s important that I show her, the power of living for yourself. There was a time where I was just living for her and unfortunately it was a miserable way to live. I had no drive and passion anymore. But, one day, God woke me up and said I gave her to you for a reason, now open your eyes and see why I gave you to your parents. There is purpose behind your life!
And in that moment, I started to choose me again. I want her to know, never be afraid to walk away from things or people that don’t value you, push you, and respect you. Choose you!
Publishing my first poetry was my start to choosing me!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have worked in the Mental health/IDD field since college. It has been a very fulfilling career path, but it’s not where I thought I would be. I have learned so much on how to give compassion, be patient, and check my own energy before coming into someone else’s space. This field helped me to see you have to pursue your dreams, you only have one life to live, in the body you are in.
I took a leap of faith and began navigating into the field that I hope to be successful in. Starting over is hard, especially when you are comfortable, but being comfortable and miserable, is uncomfortable.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Rooftop places are my absolute favorite! So that would definitely be on the list. Then I would probably do something adventurous, hiking, rock climbing, batting cage…or going to a sports arena to watch a game.
I’m super low key. I have friends that fit different versions of fun.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents, my friends, and honestly people I have come to know along the way. My parents for just being the strong people they are. They navigated this life with a lot stacked up against them. They are admirable humans, in my eyes. The knowledge they instilled in me from a spiritual perspective, gave me the insight I needed to awaken my purpose.
My friends, for giving me courage and pushing me and telling me that I had a gift.
And people just in general, without interactions with people, I wouldn’t be able to write. The inspiration to my poems would lack substance.
