We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandria Horton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandria, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting a private therapy practice has always been my goal. I knew at some point I wanted to do things on my own terms, but timing is everything. Once my husband transitioned out of the military and we were settled in Augusta I knew this was the opportunity for me to start building the business slowly. I went looking for some decor for my new office at work and came across this painting that said “Live Everyday with Intention”. It was really cute so it was a go! As that painting hung in the office there I realized that it was not only relevant for the clients, but also for me. Was I living my own life with intention? At the time I was juggling adjusting to life with two kids, being present as a wife, caring for my clients at work, and researching how to start my own practice. Overwhelmed was an understatement; I felt like I was drowning in my own life. In efforts to be intentional I took some time to get clear about how I wanted things to look and what I needed to do to get there. That clarity allowed me to streamline my priorities, communicate more effectively about where I needed help, and manage my time better. After witnessing the transformation in my clients and myself I knew that intentionality had remain at the core of this journey into entrepreneurship.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The overall mission of Be Intentional Counseling & Consulting is to help individuals and couples create the life they want, one intentional choice at a time. I specialize in helping people that struggle with feeling stuck and frustrated with where they are in a situation, feeling overwhelmed by depression or anxiety, or figuring out life’s direction. I also love to work with couples to help them communicate better, solve problems, and find their way after infidelity or betrayal. I challenge the negative thoughts and behaviors that are holding them back and empower them by teaching the tangible tools needed to tackle issues with confidence so they can flourish in their daily life.

Outside of the individual and couples therapy that I offer, I also host an annual Vision Board Event in January featuring a transformational workbook, live workshop, great food and all materials provided to help people get clear on their vision and outcomes for the year ahead. It is an amazing experience where likeminded women come together to take the first steps in cultivating the year they want to have, connecting with each other, and sharing their intentions.

In the fall, Be Intentional will start hosting virtual couples workshops to help with concerns such as reoccurring arguments, expectations, communication, boundaries, and more. This will be a dynamic and engaging experience for the couples. They will have the opportunity to learn ways to handle some of their toughest issues, remove blame, connect on a deeper level, and have fun focusing on each other. Keep an eye out for more!

I am known for my engaging and relatable style. I want my clients to feel that they are having a conversation instead of being scrutinized or judged. I am not the expert on them, they are. While I don’t rush the process, my goal is to work my way out of a job by equipping my clients with enough tools that they can eventually manage each situation in their life effectively and therapy becomes a proactive strategy to prepare for something tough or to get back on track. I am always excited to see how hard my clients work and the transformations that take place within them as a result. It is a blessing and privilege to witness this.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I grew up in Stone Mountain so the first stop would be to climb “The Rock” and explore the park. I would also take them to Ponce City Market to hang out, shop a little, and grab some food and drinks. We would then take a couple days to visit the Georgia Aquarium, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and just tour the city. If they are a friend of mine then they already know that we have to go and eat! I would definitely take them to the Consulate. I love the fact that the menu is global and changes every 90 days so there is plenty of variety and the food never disappoints. Other great stops would be Slutty Vegan and Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks. The next option would be something new that we can try together. For this trip, I would take them to The Boiler Seafood and Crab Boil Atlanta where I hear nothing but good things. I can’t wait to try it. I am not big on going to the club anymore, so I would top it all off with a relaxing time at Treat Your Feet Buckhead.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first shoutout has to definitely go to my mother. She was unconventional, not afraid to take risks, and always allowed me to have an opinion; even as a child. She was my biggest cheerleader and instilled in me a great work ethic, the idea of following my passion, and enjoying my work. I also want to shoutout my husband. He is always there to support me, makes me feel like a priority, and takes things off my plate so that I can focus. Additionally, I want to shout out my kids for being patient and understanding when I have to finish something for work or take a phone call here and there.
