We had the good fortune of connecting with Albrica Tierra and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Albrica, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My work-life balance shifted near the beginning of 2020, when the whole world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I had just bought a house (lol) and my eyes were twinkling anime-style over the excitement I had for expectations in my late 20s. When I was working from home for the majority of my time, I found myself reverting back to the way I first discovered my passion for photography: just snapping random things and moments around my new home. I still make sure that I follow a routine of completely stopping anything work-related (because boundaries are important around anything, especially work) at a certain time, but I notice myself feeling more inspired by the everyday and the mundane. Life’s simple moments. That excites me!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Right now, I’m a brand photographer at Mailchimp and I do some freelance projects and develop my personal work on the side. Working in the tech industry feels kinda bizarre for me sometimes, but I feel like I’m in a constant learning environment. I get to solve a lot of puzzles in a creative, out-of-the-box way–which I love. I love learning about something new and challenging and I get to do that a lot in my professional career.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay, let’s GOOOO–I love this question!
For food, me and my bestie would first hit up Buttermilk Kitchen for brunch, then jet over to 10th and Piedmont for mimosas. If we’re feeling like window shopping, we’ll probably head to Little 5, then spend a lot of time at the crystal shop. Take a selfie at the “Brown Girl Beautiful” mural on Peters St, get a late lunch at Bone Garden (because she loves their al pastor tacos). Head back to my place to get ready for a girl’s night out and tip out to Blu Cantina and the Basement in East Atlanta in our immaculate drip.
So the same shit we do everytime she’s here.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to the women in my life: my mother, my grandmother, and my best friend Candii Kismet (check out her work because she is amazing) (www.instagram.com/candiikismet; www.candiikismet.com). My trusty trio! Their guidance, love, humor, and wisdom has truly saved me in more ways than one.
