Meet Alba Colón | Baker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alba Colón and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alba, how do you think about risk?
I went from a stable income, working as a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room, to taking a leap of faith and leaving that all behind to pursue my passion. It was so scary & I knew that I had to give it my all in order to pay the bills & keep the lifestyle that my family was accustomed to. But it’s been so rewarding to see my business grow & flourish. My talent & passion grow every day I continue to pursue this dream. It was scary at first, but taking that leap & risking my financial security has really paid off in so many ways.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Baking is not only about creating something that taste delicious but also creating something that is visually creative. It’s a form of art. I challenge myself to recreate or come up with new designs for my clients. Honestly, when it comes to Baking, I’ve had plenty of “oops” & “oh no” moments. But it’s all about adapting & persevering through the unplanned outcome. It’s so rewarding though, when I not only meet a client’s expectations but exceed them. I enjoy the look on their face when they see my creation for the first time (like a child opening a gift at Christmas). It validates my hard work & makes my passion even stronger for my art.
Being an entrepreneur is not for everyone but I’m glad that through my business I get to bring joy & live to my community with every cake I bake; and with every client I serve, it is a unique & special opportunity to create something wonderful for them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta is so full of great places to visit. I love piedmont park. Throughout the year there’s always fun & different activities to enjoy. My favorite place to eat is a sushi place in Alpharetta, Kokos. It’s a whole in the wall, but one of the best spots for sushi.
I great place for grown & sexy music is Sage. Which is right fown the street from where live.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh wow! There are so many people that I’m continually grateful for. First & foremost, I’m grateful that God provided a way, a vision, & a group of specific friends and hospital colleagues to encourage me on this journey. For those who recognized my talent & saw a vision I didn’t see at first. For my beautiful husband who has supported and encouraged me unconditionally in venturing into full time baking.
