We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Hobdy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dominique, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started planning my business about a month before Covid hit the US & lockdown with the intention of putting a spotlight on Black brands in a way that I hadn’t seen done. I wanted to focus on creating a truly luxe experience and helping Black founders understand the benefits of affiliate marketing. My intention was to not only uplift Black-owned brands but to give Black consumers what they deserve in terms of aesthetics. I had no idea at the time what the world would look like in just a few months and how much focus and intention would be put into shopping Black.

What should our readers know about your business?
SACRD is a luxury editorial destination offering reviews and recommendations on Black-owned fashion, beauty, and lifestyle products. We’re an affiliate-based publisher that also offers insights and information to brands looking to better understand the affiliate space and how it can benefit them. I’m so proud of what we’ve built because I haven’t seen anything like it yet and there’s such a need for original content that helps buyers make informed decisions about where they’re spending their hard-earned money. SACRD hits the Black consumer and business needs from all sides providing discovery, inspiration, honest information, and promotion. I’ve spent years working as a fashion and commerce editor and producer with major brands like ESSENCE, Women’s Wear Daily, and Black Enterprise. I’ve made it my mission to tell Black stories and help Black shoppers find the best products. It’s something that I take very seriously and genuinely love so it’s amazing to see that experience culminate in this way. It’s definitely been an interesting road – I’ve taken a lot of detours and have had to pivot and re-evaluate what makes me tick several times, but I love where I’ve landed.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m based in Brooklyn but I love Atlanta. A friend took me to Milk & Honey once & those biscuits changed my life so I’d start there if I was showing someone around. After that, I’m more of a spontaneous, play-it-by-ear person so I’d find the nearest rooftop and let the day unfold.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that have played a part in helping me bring SACRD to life. My Mom and Dad have both offered their support, advice, and funds to help me get started. It was also really important for me to work with Black women to conceptualize and breathe life into this concept so huge shoutout to Jenai of Okay Jak who designed the site, Edinah of Wild Logic who designed our logos, art, and social assets. My consultant Contessa Schexnayder who is the brains behind our affiliate and SEO strategies has been a huge part of our success thus far. Last but certainly not least, my friends and peers who are fully invested in their own dreams and endeavors inspire me endlessly, particularly Katy Turner who runs The Fake Vegan, and Kenisha McIntosh of My Tribe Essentials.
