Meet Michael Smalls: Spoken word artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Smalls and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Im actually still in the process but one of the major things was figuring out the product that I had which was poetry and the market that I would be selling to which would be an audience.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So the name of my brand is sapio senses and in short that means intelligent feeling. I want you to be amerced in the words that I’m speaking. I think I’m most excited after being able to deliver a piece to a crowd and it be received in a way that not even I could have imagined. I love the way words can affect your mood and give you a different perspective on things so it’s always hard trying to find ways to reach people who tune out things that they have heard before. So being blessed with a talent that allows me to reach people is extremely exciting to me. Getting to this point was definitely very difficult. It’s hard as a black man To get up on stage and deal with the fact that a lot of people expect you to rap And speak about certain things. 1st you have to break through that stereotype in then prove that you are actually good at what you do I feel that challenge every time I grab a mic but I always love to come out on the other side Victorious. But I have also learned to stay humble and hungry there is always something new to learn and there are always things that can help you progress. What I would love for everyone to take away from my brand and story would be to renew your mind daily the old you may not be equipped to handle new problems but the things you’ve been through will prepare you for the things to come.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Here in Pittsburgh PA there are a lot of hidden gems but it really depends on what you like to do We have a great night life experiences and different sights to see. Whether it be how this city lights up from the overlook or if you love nature phipps conserve its way or the aviary will give you chills. I love to do things like gymnastics roller skating bowling horseback riding And anything that has to do with water and we have all of those here and if I had my best friend here for a week I make sure they left with enough memories for a lifetime along with a desire to get back Harrison as possible

There are so many people and organisations that have helped me tremendously such as East and cooperative ministries (EECM). Most of all my family for facilitating and nurturing my creative talents
