We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Luster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was always very assertive and extremely self sufficient during my career, I often found myself wanting to do things my own specific way and I would always have so many great ideas as to how to make certain processes better. I really desired to be my own kind of boss while developing a bomb brand. Creating my own narrative and driving the creative in this era were also key driving forces behind starting the Sassebeauti brand.

What should our readers know about your business?
Sassebeauti is the first black owned braiding hair line based in the United States . I pride myself on developing a braiding hair line that is distinctive in product design with our vibrant ombre blends that bring the fantasy or color vibes to any braiding hair style. Our business to business mission , exclusively partnering with black owned beauty supply stores to carry our products has recently taken off and I am extremely excited about that journey. The road to establishing Sassebeauti as a knowledgeable and quality hair brand has not been easy as a small business we have to work that much harder to gain brand visibility throughout the industry. We overcome these challenges by focusing on our community of artistic soulful leading ladies, and by producing an unique product that drives individuality and adventure. Along the way I have learned to be both resilient and consistent; the number of challenges that will come as an entrepreneur are endless but if you operate with a bit of organization and tenacity you will develop a natural buffer for the challenges to come. The world should know that my brand and story are both at the stage of bloom and excitement for the future; for both the possibilities and potential impact for the world around us are endless.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely start off with a nice brunch at one of my fav brunch spots . I personally favor any quaint spot in the Highlands and Inman Park area , and I am particularly partial to the peanut butter pancakes over at Highland Bakery (I used to work there) . After that a nice walk and smoothie through Piedmont Park to kill off the calories is my go to pick for a newbie to really get a great site and feel for the buzz of the city. Lunch , Im always going to go straight for six feet under , I usually go to the location off Northside…everything is great but I LOVE their oysters Rockefeller . To finish any great night off a pop in to any bar on Peters st. is always a go. Bar taco in the bulkhead area is def a Taco Tuesday must visit.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My kids of course ! Everything I do now is driven by my love , dreams, and promises for my tribe of three beautiful girls .
