Meet Deja Childers: Owner of Childers Cakery

We had the good fortune of connecting with Deja Childers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deja, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by my incredible support system which consists of my family, friends, and beautiful community. Without them I am absolutely nothing. They motivate me to be my best self.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My husband was deployed when I gave birth to our son. I suffered from terrible PPD. A lot changed at one time, and baking became my therapy. It may sound cheesy, but it really did save my life. Baking gave me a purpose. I started baking a lot. My little family couldn’t eat it all, so I started donating my creations to my husband’s coworkers, essential workers at the start of the pandemic, the unhoused community, and anyone that needed a sweet treat to make them feel a little better. Although I’d like to take the credit, I can’t. My husband and my community pushed me into the business. Have you ever seen hungry soldiers? Also my friends are not the type of people you can say no to. That alone was enough pressure to figure things out. They saw the potential in me that I didn’t see at that time. A little help from community leaders and Dr.Google helped me start my business the right way. Was it easy starting a business? Absolutely not! There are times that I get overwhelmed, but I get to do what I love for a living. People pick me to be apart of their special days. Every wedding, first birthday, homecoming, etc makes my little southern heart so happy. I’m so grateful that I’m able to live out my dream. Seeing smiles on my clients’ faces make it all worth while.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a foodie, so that part is super easy for me because my girls and I are always checking out local small businesses.

First place I’m taking my best friend is Luchal’s Gourmet Catering, LLC for breakfast while stopping at The Coffee Exchange for coffee flights. We would then head out to The Wild Goose Meeting House for lunch to enjoy some Black Girl Magic wine and nachos loaded with mild BlackGirlSalsa. All of their entrees are now served with yummy BlackGirlSalsa. Dinner would be a hard choice because we have so many amazing places to choose from, but I would have to go with Don Guillo because their mofongo is to die for. Dessert is heard for me because I’m the cake lady. If I had to choose it would Caffeinated Cow for the dessert win! Their ice cream, customer service, and drink options are out of this world.

The list of people to meet is so long, but you can meet them all at one place. All of the sweetest most caring people of the Springs are always at a 719 Be the Change event. I am so thankful that I get to call the organizers, Yevgeniya Tsyganok and Latrina Ollie, my close friends. Helping others and making my community better is fun to me. I really enjoy being around such amazing people doing great things. I’ve met lifelong friends while making sure a family has food for the week, handing out care bags to the unhoused community, and keeping the land our Neighborhoods are built on free from trash. I would definitely bring my best friend along to be apart of such greatness.

Colorado is full of picture perfect places to visit like Pike’s Peak, Garden of the Gods, and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, but the Pikes Peak Children’s Museum will always have a special place in my heart. Not only does it give me a place to let my toddler’s imagination run wild, but it’s run by some incredible people. They will always gain my families support. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others.
