Meet Morgan Warfield: Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Warfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I initially started my own business because I wanted a job to have a little extra money for myself. During quarantine I had a lot of extra time on my hands, and I’m not one that enjoys having nothing to do. I’d rather keep myself busy doing something I enjoy, hence me crocheting.
Even though I was crochet only as a hobby at the time, every time I finished a new crochet top, I would post it on my Instagram to show it off. I was surprised to see how many people were interested in buying the tops, and that was when I first got the idea to make a business out of a hobby.
I spent weeks creating designs and patterns for my initial launch. I wanted to have variety and enough products so that there was something for everyone. Then I set up my website and Instagram. Initially, support came mainly from friends and family, but overtime, I have have over 150 orders in the United States alone.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hooked Looks is a custom crochet company. I make a variety of crochet tops and accessories and sell them on both my website shophookedlooks.com and Miiriya. My most popular items tend to be bralettes, and I am excited to release some new designs for this summer.
My business is different from a lot of other handmade clothing businesses in that size does not change pricing. When deciding on pricing, I wanted to ensure it would be fair to both me and the customer, and I didn’t believe in charging extra for a larger size. I’ve upheld this standard to this day, and I don’t plan on changing.
Starting my business was fairly easy, but it involved a lot of personal compromise. Being that I already knew how to crochet, I had to design a few unique tops to set myself apart from other sellers. I also had to determine sizing, which required a good amount of trial and error.
One of my biggest struggles is taking pictures of the completed goods. Although I like to think I have an eye for design, photography is where I fall short. I’m not particularly camera shy, but having to model my products can get a little awkward at times. Trying to show off the product, make sure I don’t look silly, and beat the three second camera timer can get hectic.
Having my own business has taught me a lot about customer service. I’d never had a job before this, so I was inexperienced and doing a lot of guessing. Luckily after a year of practice, I can say I have gotten much better. Participating in things like local artisan markets and hosting giveaways has helped me accumulate a supportive base of customers.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the skating rink Sparkles. When I was younger, my dad and I went to Sparkles every Wednesday to skate and eat cheese fries, and since then, roller skating has held a special place in my heart.
We would also have to see the laser show at Stone Mountain. I go there often to picnic and walk the trail, but seeing the laser show is essential to anyone’s visit to Atlanta.
Then we would visit my favorite coffee shop. It’s called The Corner Cup and they have the best coffee in Atlanta and the sweetest staff. They also host artisan markets that I sell products at!
Before they left, we would have to eat at The Slutty Vegan. The burgers are so amazing, and it’s a treat every time I get the chance to go.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to some of my best friends, Hangatu and Belane. Throughout this entire process, they have been unimaginably supportive and helpful. Whether it be sketching out logo designs or accompanying me to craft markets, they are always there when I need help.
