We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacqueline Ciulla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacqueline, how do you think about risk?
When I think about risk, what also comes to mind is success, I’m a firm believer in taking risks in life since tomorrow is never promised or the outcome. In my life I have taken many risks that some may not make in there lifetime. I moved away from home at 16 started a new life at a new school with a huge cultural difference from being raised in NYC. That decision was a huge risk that led me to face some hard questions about what exactly I was going to make later in life. At 22 I started my own business doing hair it was my one true passion and driving force. The risk factor was I had sole responsibility on my brand/ business and it was solely up to me to build it into what it is now. If I was scared and had fear of risks I do believe my life would feel sort of ordinary not that it is negative I just knew the risk would be worth it for my personal growth and allow me free range in the course of my life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I personally feel like hair is art, a blank canvas where I’m creating highs and lows, highlights and contrast, depth and dimension. What would set my work apart from others would be based on the attention to detail I give to each client. Every head of hair that sits in my chair has there own customized color application even down to the formula, nothing I do is fabricated it is a customized to each head of hair I paint. I have also had extensive training by some amazing professionals and staying on trend plays a huge role in what I do on the daily. How I got to where I am has not been easy I received a lot of resistance and was told I would fail time and time again. I never let what they said get to me. I overcame many of my challenges by preserving through continuously showing up and saying yes to every opportunity that came my way. I have taken on very tricky hair color corrections when I didn’t have the full knowledge and understanding to even know truly how it will turn out. Trial and error has always been apart of my story. Although facing tough things can be hard I try to remain calm at all times and not let fear derail all that I have been able to achieve and overcome. What I want the world to know about my brand and story is that I will always be true and authentic to who I am. What you see is what you get, Ive tried conforming and I never felt it wholeheartedly. My brand represents myself, my clients, and there stories. It’s a portfolio of all the amazing people who I get to make and impact on and them giving the same if not more back to me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to my favorite spot in the city West Midtown. One they have my favorite coffee shop Brash, there are a few cute boutiques for shopping especially my favorite free people. We would grab a salad at my favorite spot UpBeet, have some Jeni’s ice cream. Maybe have sushi one night at Oku. I then would take them to piedmont park, one of my favorite places to get a good walk in, with beautiful view of the Atlanta skyline. Bike over to Krog Street and finish it off with a night out at the Battery Atlanta which has a little bit of everything. Shopping, Food, Bars, and the Braves.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would definitely have to give a shoutout to some of my fellow hairstylists for always pushing me in my early days to not give up , Kellie was one of the first hairstylist who mentored me she basically taught me most of what I know know today and always kept me in check and took endless hours educating me. Mel who has helped me in so many of my color mistakes has helped me with understanding formulas and made me more confident behind the chair. As well a driving force in me going out on starting my own brand and buisness. Emily was a big supporter of mine and also talked me out of wanting to throw the towel in time and time again. She inspires me to be a true girl boss and to always say yes to any and all opportunities. Lenielle took me under her wing when I started branching out to the bridal industry she referred me endlessly and used me on each of her styled shoots she was so kind and allowed me to showcase my work in blogs, magazines and took my career to the next level. I also cannot forget my family and boyfriend for being my biggest fans they have helped and guided me throughout my life and have molded me in to the woman I have become today all of there support has been the driving factor in all I have achieved.
