Meet Tieanna Burton | Founder & Creative Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tieanna Burton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tieanna, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Authenticity. We pride ourselves on sharing genuine and refreshing perspectives centering gender and sexuality. It’s being able to come together to share who we are and how we show up in the world. The Bi Queer is a digital space and collection of stories dedicated to amplifying Black and Brown voices of the queer community. We curate a host of multimedia projects centering QTBIPOC. We have honest conversations about everyday life. This is what makes us authentic and has been the most important factor behind our success as multimedia storytellers. Our work is a labor of love. Love for ourselves and love for our community.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We are creatives. We are storytellers. We use multimedia to empower the community we serve. The BQ community blog publishes personal narrations as a way of preserving our experiences. The Featured Voice collection is an inspirational space designated to highlighting the self-journey process. The Untold Love Stories podcast is an audio series dedicated to love. The Queer and Authentic series is a conversational interview designed to address social impact and equity. Our mission has always been to humanize the experiences of queer people of color. We fall in love, we have families, we build community, we are professionals, we are neighbors, we are human.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve lived in various regions across the country, but Detroit is where I call home. If I am going to suggest visiting anywhere, I am going to start in my hometown. Detroit has a unique and longstanding queer history. From organizations such as the Ruth Ellis Center and LGBT Detroit, pride events such as Hotter than July and Motor City Pride, to social events organized by residents such as Lesbian Social Detroit, HER Detroit, and FireHouse Music Series. Expand your destination and look for queer pockets throughout a city’s landscape that reflects a diverse expression of gender, sexuality, and lifestyles.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I would like to pay homage to QTBIPOC who have paved the way for me to show up as my authentic self no matter where I am and to curate a community dedicated to that same vision.

I would like to shout out the BQ Team. Aysha Boston is the Director of Photography and manages all things related to staging, photoshoots, and photo editing. Jennifer Watson is the Director of Videography and manages all things related to production, filming, and video editing. Madison Thomas is the Social Media Manager and works deliberately to increase our reach across all social platforms. These folx have been instrumental in the expansion and development of The Bi Queer. Together, we are committed to the growth of the community we serve. We have set the intention to collaborate and ensure its fruition.
