We had the good fortune of connecting with Breanna Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Breanna, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote would have to be the verse “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 1:6, because life for me is about growing and evolving in my purpose. When there are challenges along the way this verse helps me to remember that God didn’t bring me this far to leave me here or to be stagnant. So, I never have to wonder if he is with me or if he is working on my behalf.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started the blog Memoirs of a Happy Black Girl as an interim outlet while I wrote my book. My goal was to candidly express topics I am most passionate about, to inspire and cultivate community.
I have sense developed an intentions and affirmations journal containing personal quotes and affirmations that have helped me to navigate difficult situations and have promoted personal growth. I wanted to create the journal I wished I had when I was younger. One that could prompt me when I didn’t know what to write and uplift me when I felt discouraged. My life is where it is now because I wrote it all down and prayed about it.
Journaling was where I learned to get comfortable with uncomfortable feelings, emotions and vulnerability. It was an opportunity to release without judgement . I am grateful that my amazing graphic designer sister was able to bring my vision to life.
It is scheduled to be released in May. My blog has been my outlet of self expression and I wanted this journal to do the same for others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I am a foodie, so my agenda would primarily be centered around food!
For breakfast we would have to visit Twisted Soul Kitchen where they have some of the best Cajun inspired breakfast and have coffee at Cafe Comma.
We would do lunch at either Yebo Haus for South African inspired cuisine or Del Bar for amazing Mediterranean fare. For dinner we would check out Le Colonial or South City Kitchen for Vietnamese or Southern, whichever she was in the mood for. That evening we could walk off some of that food at the High Museum.
Later that evening we could check out The Regent or the James Room for craft cocktails. I also couldn’t let her leave before we traipsed the Beltline, and stopped by Two Urban Licks for the Salmon chips and a frose’.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother because she helped shape who I have become, supported my creative efforts in every way she could and her prayers and faith in God to take care of me in ways that she couldn’t.
My husband for always supporting my creative journey and for always finding ways to make the seemingly impossible possible.
My sister in love who is an amazing graphic designer, my sounding board and always finding new ways to take my visions to the next level.
My best friends who always try to create avenues to highlight or showcase my work.
