We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittney Chantele and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittney, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Other than deciding to work for myself, I’d say the single most important decision I’ve made that has contributed to my success, is trusting my gut feeling. If something I’m working on doesn’t feel complete, I let it sit until I can figure out what else it needs. Sometimes, I’ll consult a friend or trusted collaborator to give me feedback. I’ve been doing this more recently and it has made my “good” songs turn into “great” songs.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Currently, I am focusing on a pop/hip-hop album all about Queer love. I’ve done this once before in 2019 with the release of my debut album, ‘A Fire On Venus.’ However, I haven’t said all I need to say about my past relationships and I’d like to share more of those stories with the world. I think there’s not enough Queer love songs out there – especially from Black artists. This inspires and encourages me even more to make Queer love songs. I always think about my bus rides to and from high school and how I would listen to love songs that used “he/him/his” pronouns and how I really could never fully relate to the song. I want to make music that more people can relate too – music where you don’t have to switch out the pronouns when you sing in order for it to feel good for you. Although I’m not the only artist creating this type of music, I do believe it sets me apart from many artists that focus on the topic of love.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to Pittsburgh and I wanted to show them the best time ever…I’d start by grabbing lunch at Té Café – they have the best sushi in Pittsburgh. Then, I’d show them one of our amazing art museums – there’s several to choose from! Afterwards, I’d grab dinner at Nicky’s Thai Kitchen. There’s honestly a lot to do for a small city. Our parks are great ways to get outside and get some fresh air so that would be another option of a to-do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My list of shoutouts is long to be honest. I wouldn’t be where I am today without so so many people and my community having my back and lifting me up. A huge shout-out goes to 1Hood Media who has supported my artistic visions since 2018 and is also always there for me to bounce ideas to. I also have to thank everyone who has contributed to my music projects. My producers, song writers, graphic designers, instrumentalists, promoters, local venues, and of course, my amazing fans. Without y’all, my career would not be where it is today.
