We had the good fortune of connecting with Keturah Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keturah, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Coming up with my business idea required a lot of soul-searching. I had just gotten laid off from a job that I thought was going to be my career and felt like I was back at square one. As a recent college grad, at the time, I had no sense of myself outside of college and didn’t really know what I wanted to do to generate income outside of entertainment. As I previously stated, I decided to do some soul-searching and actually think about things I love to do and things I am good at. There were a good amount of things on the list, but I decided to narrow it down to helping people and education. Being that I am an advocate for educational equality and accessibility to resources, I decided to start Let’s Get Write Tutoring Service. Our mission includes making sure that access to tutoring is available with affordable pricing but quality tutors. I wanted students to be able to get the 1-1 help they deserve without parents making “tutoring or food” sacrifices
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work stands out from others because I was a student who would’ve benefited from my program so I know how to really approach students and make sure they understand that not only do I and the other tutors care about their educational success, but we also care about them. We make sure that the student understands that they are unique and highlight their understandings of education so that they know their educational journey is and can be centered around them. This way of thinking helps the student to be able to gain control when they feel lost and want to “clock out”. My program helps students to gain confidence and understand that “being wrong” is not as embarrassing as it is a learning catalyst. It hasn’t been an easy journey. I am still learning new things about really tightening my business structure. Talking to business mentors, I have been able to figure out how to learn more about perfecting a startup. Challenges arise, but just as I teach my students, they are catalysts for learning. You can’t grow without challenges, mistakes, and developing great questions. Asking those questions helps me to be able to anticipate future challenges and how to get through them. I want the world to know that my brand is human-focused! We are a service that cares about the customers (students) and their parent’s wallets. We truly want to make an impact on the students so we often extend ourselves to being mentors to the students.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my friends and family members who have volunteered as tutors, given advice, and helped me to select branding tools.
