We had the good fortune of connecting with Demetria Fitzgerald and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Demetria, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe that the most important factor behind the success of my brand is authenticity. I create products that celebrate my Black culture. The songs, movies, and films that I love so dearly are loved by the Black community as a whole. Our customers are able to trust the woman behind the brand because they know that I’m not pandering to them. We’re family.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Candles 4 the Culture is unique because not only do our products smell great, but they also trigger nostalgia. I’m proud that when customers light our candles, they are literally “lighting one for the culture.” I’m excited about sharing Candles 4 the Culture with as many people as possible. Our audience is growing daily and I’m so thankful for that. It has not been easy starting a brand from scratch but with perseverance, we’ve overcome the challenges of our infancy. I have learned that no matter the circumstances, keep the faith and trust God to work things out. He always does! I want the world to know that Candles 4 the Culture is a celebration of who we are. Black is beautiful and deserves to be celebrated. We’re going to continue doing just that!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
While I’m a homebody and enjoy staying in, there are a few places that I like to visit when I do venture out. As a city with such a rich history and culture, Atlanta has so many places to go and things to do. I highly recommend the Atlanta Food Truck Park to enjoy great food and vibes. Most visitors would also appreciate a visit to The Center for Civil and Human Rights. Sports fans have their pick of professional games to go to. If you’re in the mood to shop, check out the Village Market at Ponce. Candles 4 the Culture is also a great shopping destination. 😊 Finally, no trip to the A would be complete without a trip to Slutty Vegan.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely need to shout out my family. I would not be able to do what I do without their love and support. They have had my back from the beginning. From helping me brainstorm ideas in the beginning to working after hours to fulfill orders, they’re always there. I can’t thank them enough. Jake, Justyn, Mom… thank you so much! I love y’all!!
