Meet MAKO Girls | Performing Artists & Influencers

We had the good fortune of connecting with MAKO Girls and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MAKO Girls, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
What inspired us to be the MAKO Girls and pursue a career in the music industry was meeting the boy group “Mindless Behavior”. Back in 2012 at DBS Sounds. After their meet & greet event, we watched their documentary together. Seeing them performing in front of the masses and the opportunities to travel the world, we were set on our path to become a girl group.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The key elements that differentiates us as the MAKO Girls from other girl groups is our sound, the way how our group runs, and our background. Our genre of music is Urban Pop/ R&B. Being from the ATL you’re able to hear the influence in our beats, vocally having a sing-rap cadence. Down to each member being able to sing, dance, and rap- you’re getting a performance whenever we hit the stage.
We were able to develop our sound over the years, starting from more of a pop sound, transitioning to rap, and then going into R&B. Even now we’ve become versatile with our sound, dabbling into afro-beats we try to branch out into different genres to not limit our music.
Beyond that we also hosted our own events such as the MAKO Girls Carnival Glow Party. It started as our introduction into the music industry and then became a platform that many youth and teen artist, like ourselves at the time, could perform at. Now it’s become a culture fusion event/ concert representing our Caribbean heritage and has a concert style with the different performers that come out to turn up with our audience. Along with us headlining the show, presenting all the songs that we have out and what’s to be released.
Maintaining the lifestyle of being in a girl group is not easy but we are able to manage it by scheduling things out and always communicating to each other about what we have going on.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best time when you come to ATL honestly are the food spots, hands down. Most of the time whenever we aren’t performing we are either at Atlantic Station eating at Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ. Out at an American Deli getting a 10 piece wing meal. Or late at night after hanging out at The Battery, we’re heading to Waffle House for our meal at 3AM in the morning.
If you are visiting ATL in May (end of the school year-setting up for the Summer type vibes) We would say attend MomoCon (for all of our Anime lovers), and you have to attend a LAN afterparty, and you must attend The Atlanta Caribbean Carnival celebrations. If you come back to the “A” in the fall you have to check out One Music Fest or ATLAnime Fest .

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would love to shout out first is our management team Michael & Te-Niki Ochoa. From the day that we said we wanted to become a girl group they have supported us non-stop. Constantly investing their time, finances, and doing all they can in helping us to pursue our dream.
Another person would like to shout out is our engineer JT, he truly is the audio guru- constantly enhancing our sound and spending many hours with us in the studio to create the music that you all hear now!
The next set of people we would that we want to mention are the collective that has been the stepping stones in our artist development journey. DJ Farenheit, our DJ uncle in the industry. He always shouts us out wherever he goes. You can hear his voice on every single live show mix we have ever performed. Marvelous Enterprises for developing us into the artist that we are today. That is our foundation Mr. Marvin McIntyre, Mrs. Loretta, and Mr. James Slaughter (RIP) have been there since the beginning of our journey, Deka Janifier, our vocal coach, for building our vocals and challenging us to be great. Kiki Ely, our creative director, Kiki has been working with us since 2019 with choreography, live show performances, music videos, etc. Her entire team is amazing. And of course our MAKO Maniacs for the constant support that they give to us.
