Meet Ericka King | Photographer / Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ericka King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ericka, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance can be such a struggle for many business owners. I was awful at juggling this in the beginning. Through trial and error, I slowly learned. There is a time for work and for family. For me, having a schedule and a designated office at home makes it easier for me. Once I’m in my office space, I know it’s time to work. I have times that I check my email per day. That way I don’t get overwhelmed by communication or disctract4ed from stopping what I’m already working on to answer it right then. I still am able to respond to clients in a timely manner because that is very important to me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Something I pride myself on is how well and quickly I communicate with my clients. I know they value it and it’s so important. I try to always give more than I get. It’s a life motto of mine. People want to be heard, understood and felt like they matter. This is what I try to give clients. I treat my clients like babies. I know that sounds a little crazy. I try to everything on my end to make the whole photography process easy. Need help with choosing outfits, I got you. Need help with location, I got you. Need help getting your child to smile? I got you. Running a little late because getting ready for a photoshoot is work? I got you. I am a business owner but I am a human first and always.
Running a business it not easy but there is joy in it! You need thick skin though. It used to hurt my feelings when someone would choose another photographer over me. I’m used to it now because I’ve been doing it for years. Things happen for a reason. So if someone doesn’t choose you, don’t sweat it. Because with 7 billion plus people on this planet, there is more than enough pie for everyone. It’s best to keep planning, keep doing, and keep showing up for the clients that do choose you because they are gems my friend.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is super fun! We would go eat at Ate Track because the food is delicious and the atmosphere is fun! I would take them to Piedmont Park because to holds beauty and you can see different parts of the city. I would say The Atlanta Aquarium because it’s a gem and I haven’t been in a long time. I would also say if it’s fall, let’s take a fun ride with good country music and go to the North GA Mountains because the views and apple picking can’t be beat. Plus I am all about documenting memories with photos and videos. So bring on the camera!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my parents. They instilled grit, hard work, focus, organization into my life when I needed it growing up which is so important in life. When I first started my business, there was so much I needed to learn and do. I watched YouTube videos, I took classes, and I practiced taking pictures like a mad woman. I watched and learned so much from watching a photographer, Jared Polin on youtube. It made learning fun and didn’t feel so hard. Ana Brandt, because I specialize in family and newborn photography was a godsend. Her classes, free guidance online and just what she gives to the world is simply amazing. I have always tried to be my biggest cheerleader but people need people and they make life better. So to anyone that helped me along my photography journey, thank you big!
