We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Wow, as I cogitate on this incredible 40-year career journey, it has been! Reflecting on my work-life balance over the years is like looking back on a thrilling adventure that has evolved in the most fascinating ways, covering my 22-year honorable service in the military, exciting 10-year tenure in corporate America, and a dynamic nine years as an elected official!

The Military Years

During my 22 years in the military, the work-life balance was a different beast altogether. The discipline, dedication, and demands were intense, but they also instilled a sense of purpose, leadership, and camaraderie that was unmatched. The structure was rigorous, and the balance leaned heavily towards work, often leaving little time for personal pursuits and a significant amount of sacrifice, especially in family quality time. Yet, those years were foundational, building resilience and a strong work ethic that would serve me well in the years to come.

Transition to Corporate America

After two decades of military service, stepping into the corporate world was like entering a new realm of possibilities. The next 10 years in corporate America were transformative. Here, I found a new kind of balance, one that allowed for personal growth and family quality time. The corporate environment offered flexibility, a chance to pursue hobbies, and the opportunity to nurture relationships. It was a time of recalibration, learning to juggle professional responsibilities while cherishing personal moments.

Life as an Elected Official

And then, the incredible opportunity to serve as a state legislator for 9 years brought about another dynamic shift. Balancing the demands of public service with personal life requires adaptability and unwavering passion. The work was deeply fulfilling, knowing that each decision had a profound impact on the community, society, and the state of Georgia. Here, balance meant being present for constituents, attending countless meetings, and still finding moments to connect with family and recharge. It was a delicate dance, but the sense of purpose and service made every moment worthwhile.

Reflecting on Balance

Through these diverse roles, my perspective on work-life balance has continually evolved. Each chapter brought its unique challenges and rewards, teaching me to prioritize what truly matters. Balance isn’t a static destination but a dynamic, ever-changing journey. It’s about staying flexible, embracing change, and finding joy in both professional achievements and personal milestones.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, I am filled with gratitude for the rich tapestry of experiences that have shaped my work-life balance. It’s a testament to the importance of adapting, growing, and staying true to oneself. Each phase, whether in the military, corporate America, or public service, has enriched my life in immeasurable ways.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

Overcoming adversity has been a cornerstone of my professional narrative. When faced with daunting challenges, I relied on my unwavering commitment to integrity and service. These principles guided me through turbulent times, ensuring that I never compromised my values. I learned that resilience and a steadfast focus on doing what is right are vital to navigating the complexities of any career.
