Parenting series: having a positive impact


Parenting is an incredibly important responsibility and so we wanted to get a conversation going with input from parents in the community. We asked them: what is the most important thing you’ve done as a parent? We’ve highlighted some of the responses below.

The most important thing that I’ve done as a parent in terms of the impact on my children is to never stop fighting. Struggling with mental health issues since 2006 has been a long and hard battle but my children who are actually young adults (30 & 21) have seen me fight every day to overcome my mental health issues. I believe the most important impact I’ve had is leading by example—demonstrating perseverance, commitment to education, and strong moral values. I think that the most important thing that I have done as a parent in terms of impacting my now grown adult daughters was to complete and receive my college degree. I attended college immediately after graduating from high school in the fall of 1986. I attended college for 2 years before dropping out to go into the Marine Corps. Read More>>
