Meet Evangeline Martinez | Tattoo Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Evangeline Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evangeline, how do you think about risk?
I believe taking risks is necessary for growth. Beginning my career as a tattoo artist was a risk in itself. You really aren’t able to provide for your family consistently until at least year 3 or 4. Most of us work at least one or two more jobs just to make it work. I also have uprooted myself, as an artist, about 3 different times. Each time felt like I was starting over- however, each time I learned something new and became more resilient.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing that is clear when it comes to my art- is my love and passion for what I do. I love the opportunity to collaborate with my clients to create projects that are organically formed from our chemistry. I get extremely excited when our energy blends seamlessly to create this flow of creativity- that eventually produces their tattoos! It’s an incredible and rare opportunity to serve my community in that way. And I also like to think that I’m not “just tattooing.” I would hope that our entire interaction can be healing in some way as my clients share details about their lives with me. I get the opportunity to give them original artwork but also, I have the opportunity to show kindness, love and respect in the way I carefully and intentionally care for each client during the tattoo process. I love that I get to do that! To me, that is being like Jesus to the world- which seems to be rare these days. And I believe I am where I am because this same love, kindness and respect was extended to me as well. Any tattoo artist will tell you how brutal this industry can be- and I have not been shielded from that. I’ve truly had to fight to be where I am. And in all honesty, I’ve made so many mistakes along the way. I’ve experienced so many hard lessons, as a tattoo artist but also personally. I’ve learned that being a tattoo artist is not my entire identity- it’s something I love and am extremely passionate about but there are many things that come first. My two daughters and my husband come before my career. My own well-being and mental/spiritual health come before being a tattoo artist. I think so many of us have bought the lie that we have to be all or nothing to thrive but sacrificing every other part of our lives to move forward is not worth it. I’ve tried that, and it leaves you empty. I think one of the hardest lessons to learn is setting healthy boundaries. We must work very hard- that is true- but it must be in balance. We must take care of ourselves and our families first. On the topic of boundaries, I think it’s also important to consider (as a female especially) what boundaries you will have in place. I think now that my work life is in balance with my personal life- I am finally able to thrive the way I’ve always wanted to. Lastly, I think it’s so incredibly important to stay humble and teachable. There is never ending information and skill to learn when it comes to tattooing. No one will ever fully arrive- but that’s also why it never gets boring!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A place I recently discovered is Your Third Spot- it is such a vibe! From the food, to the drinks to the games- the way the staff interact with you. Definitely a cool spot to check out! I also love to dance- so if you want to go dancing, I’d say Havana is the place. I love the ocean as well, so the Georgia Aquarium is a must- at least once! Another fun area would be Top Golf- I’ve always hated golf but Top Golf is something anyone can play and enjoy. They also have great food and music. The Movie Tavern is a cool experience if you want a comfortable spot to watch a movie.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jesus Christ is everything to me and the reason I never gave up.
My mentor- Jason Tasi, gave me the foundation I needed to keep growing after he passed away.
My husband- Angelo Martinez, for bringing out the best version of me through genuine love and passion so I can continue to grow and thrive.
