We had the good fortune of connecting with Colby Snow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Colby, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always been drawn to art.
I started my artistic journey when I was younger and have been creating ever since. Truth be told, my artwork is almost like a journal for me… in which if you view all my past works in chronological order… you see growth… you see more attention to detail… even my color choices have changed. It is a reflection of me and it is my way of speaking without words.
I am very passionate about what I do as an artist, and my artistic career goal is to spread my “journal” to the world.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My painting process is very hands-on and intimate. I mainly use my fingers to apply oil paints, which allows me to feel more connected to the piece as it evolves. I also mix the colors directly on the canvas, which creates layers of depth and subtle hints of different hues, like blues and yellows, that you can still catch in the final image. The idea is to let the journey of the painting unfold right before your eyes—each layer tells a part of the story, and I want you to feel that progression when you look at the finished work. This is exactly why I tell everyone, that pictures do not do my work justice. You have to see it in person to feel the impact.
My work is influenced by my life in Chicago, my birthplace, and the city’s rich art scene. Growing up, I was exposed to a wide range of artistic expressions from jazz to street art, all of which helped shape my style. The diversity and vibrancy of the city continue to inspire my approach in a way. Painting has become my way of reconnecting with my roots and reliving those nostalgic moments
I am most proud of how far I’ve come in a short time. A few years ago, I would not have imagined where i am now but I have been able to build momentum through dedication, consistency, and most of all– staying true to myself. It was not easy, though. I’ve had many moments of self-doubt. Moments where I thought to myself, “who are you kidding, girl? Artists only gain popularity when they are dead”. That is when I buckled down studying the greats. I studied their journey, their techniques, their motives… that’s when I finally came to this new mentality: “Colby, you’re next. You will be the next successful LIVING artist”
Ever since then, I have been selling my work, and participating in art shows, to art shows. Now I am receiving so many opportunities to spread my creativity to the world. I am forever grateful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
High Museum is a MUST. Lucky for them, I am always going to have my membership handy so they get to experience beautiful artwork at no extra cost to them. I honestly love going there when I need a little spark of inspiration. I would also take them to Little 5 Points because OF COURSE that would be one of my favorite spots. So much creativity is in that area.. not to mention the people are so friendly and a breath of fresh air. I love meeting with fellow creatives there but my guests will absolutely love the uniqueness of each store.
I can’t have them leaving ATL without visiting the Beltline. That right there, would probably be a day event in itself just because there is so much to explore going down the Beltline from start to finish.
As far as restaurants, it really depends. I am usually the “tell me what you want, and I got a place for it.” If they want something new, of course, I have ideas! My top place to take my friends when they are visiting is Desta. I LOVE that restaurant.
All to say, if any of my friends has me as their tour guide… you will see Atlanta through an artistic lense.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Family!!!! I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for the support of my mom, dad, brother, and uncles…most of all, my granddaddy. Though my grandfather passed away years ago, his love and support carry over strongly to this day.
I cannot thank my family enough for standing by my side and being the LOUDEST to cheer me on with my art journey. I love you deeply and will continue to make you all proud.
Also!!! I cannot forget the many, many supporters I have! I’m still in awe that there are people, whether they know me, have heard of me, or have never met me… who love my art! THANK YOU!!!!
