We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Trick Steinbach and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Bravery. I started as the first child to a single mom and we spent years on welfare. Growing up, I struggled with a speech impediment and an eating disorder. There was so much to be afraid of – and I was often afraid. Early on, I realized that bravery is a skill — not a personality trait. Then I decided that I have it, and that I can build it. Step-by-step I built my bravery and the trajectory of my entire life shifted: before 40, I had worked in over 25 different countries, was earning multiple six-figures, was very often the only woman in the room, and had even become bi-lingual (German). All of my success relied on bravery. Bravery to try, especially when I didn’t ‘belong’ in the room. Bravery to fail over and over and over again. Bravery to succeed and enjoy my success. And now bravery to invest in others so that they too build their bravery as the international bravery coach for women in tech.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m on a mission to shift how this world defines, identifies, and celebrates bravery. Its why I get out of bed and keep going through the messiness of building a business. I deeply believe that we are ready to move away from the limited view of bravery as fighting, rushing into burning buildings, and going to war and towards a more holistic understanding of bravery that includes: choosing vulnerability, being earnest, and building connections based on honest, perhaps difficult conversations as well as shared experiences and commonalities. The seven generations that follow us will benefit from a more holistic and inclusive understanding of who and what is BRAVE. I am super jazzed to play a significant role in our shift.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hands down the greenbelt! The best kept secret.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout out is dedicated to the incredible team that forms AnitaB.org. AnitaB is a non-profit organization that is devoted to shifting who imagines and builds technology so that they mirror the people and societies using technology. Right now the tech industry — the spine of ALL industries — is dominated by very limited identities that are leaving behind …and leaving out innovation and opportunities … for all people. I worked in tech for nearly 20 years and, even though my work took me to over 25 countries, the decision rooms were full of primarily white, straight men. One of the most inspiring moments of my entire career was standing on a stage as over 25,000 women from all over the world, representing all different nationalities, faiths, life experiences, and identities streamed by. It was proof that the talent pool is diverse and ready TODAY. AnitaB is working hard to make an inclusive, representative world of tech. I am proud to be a member and an active supporter.
